BERKELEY, Calif. -- UC Davis junior Alec Adamson upset No. 30 Florian Lakat in a battle at the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup, but No. 16 California proved to be too tough, downing the No. 69-ranked Aggies, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
The loss ended UC Davis' 12-match winning streak, dropping the Aggies to 15-4 on the year. It was UC Davis' first defeat since the Aggies fell to Abilene Christian, 4-3, back on Jan. 30. The Golden Bears won their third straight match, improving to 14-5 overall on the season.
Adamson, who was ranked among the top 125 players in the nation for the better part of this season, earned his second victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season, bouncing back from a 6-0 loss to Lakat in the opening set, to post a 6-3 win in the second to even the match. With the overall match already decided, Adamson claimed the Aggies' lone point on the day with a 10-3 win in the third, winning his third straight and his 10th in his last 11.
It was the sixth match against a nationally ranked foe this season for Adamson, who also defeated then-No. 30 Uros Petronijevic of San Diego during the fall.
California jumped out to the early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, before taking five of the remaining six singles contests. The Golden Bears, which featured a lineup of four nationally ranked singles players according to the most recent Oracle/ITA Division I poll released on April 12, posted straight-set victories at the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6, spots in the line to nail down the win, followed closely by a victory at the No. 2 spot.
Adamson followed with his win at No. 1, and the Aggies almost clinched a second point on the day at the No. 5 spot in the lineup as sophomore Everett Maltby battled No. 103 Oskar Wikberg. Maltby took the early lead in the match with a 6-3 victory in the opening set before Wikberg evened things up with a 6-4 win in the second. Unlike his teammate, Maltby was unable to close the deal in the third, as Wikberg pulled out a 10-4 triumph to clinch the match.
UC Davis looks to begin anew this weekend, heading down the coast for a pair of Big West Conference contests against two unbeaten league powers. The Aggies open on Friday (April 15) against No. 50 UC Santa Barbara (13-6, 3-0) at 1 p.m., before heading to San Luis Obispo to take on No. 65 Cal Poly (11-8, 3-0) on Saturday (April 16) at 2 p.m.
