Four Aggie teams receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards

April 13, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. - A program-record four UC Davis teams representing women’s golf, women’s tennis, women’s water polo and men’s cross country received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for having Academic Progress Rates that rank them among the best in their sports, it was announced by the organization on Wednesday.

The NCAA presents Public Recognition Awards on an annual basis to teams whose APRs are among the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sports. Composed of both student-athlete retention and eligibility, APR calculations help measure classroom performance of all student-athletes.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each term by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The most recent APR data covers the 2011-12 through 2014-15 academic years.

“We want to ensure college athletes are getting the most out of their experience, and academics are a top priority in this effort,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “The teams honored today earned recognition by making a commitment to success in the classroom as well as in competition. We celebrate their achievement and dedication to preparing themselves for life after college.”

Women’s tennis has been a regular on the NCAA Public Recognition Awards list, having been among the top 10 percent every year that UC Davis has reported scores. Women’s water polo has earned recognition each of the past two years while women’s golf and men’s cross country are receiving their first honors.

UC Davis previously had three teams honored twice, most recently in 2013.

Overall, 1,071 teams, including 649 women’s teams and 422 men’s or mixed squads, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday. Nearly 950 teams received performance APR scores.
