March 4, 2016 LA JOLLA, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Adam Levie and junior Alec Adamson made a run to the main draw round of 32 on Friday, highlighting the Aggies' efforts at the 127th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Four of the five UC Davis teams advanced out of the opening round, with the only loss coming against a No. 3-seeded team from Stanford. The No. 12 seeded duo of Adamson and Levie led the way, opening with an 8-1 win over Adrian Cordova and Kona Luu, then followed that up with an 8-5 triumph over Boise State's Pedro Cavalcante and Brian Foley.
The wins propelled the tandem into a match against the tournament's top seed in Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State, who posted an 8-4 to end the Aggies' run. Cash and Kadhe are ranked No. 15 in the nation according to the Feb. 23 Oracle/ITA Division I doubles rankings.
Sophomore Tommy Lam and junior Jesse Ross opened with an 8-3 win over UC San Diego's Rodrigo Amaral and Justin Zhang, and James Wade and Eli Whittle posted an 8-6 victory over Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov and Brandon Sutter, to begin their day.
In the round of 64, Lam and Ross fell to the sixth-seeded duo of Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat, 8-1, while Wade and Whittle dropped an 8-3 decision to Pepperdine's Petr Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane, who upset the tournament's No. 6 seed in their first-round match.
Senior Brett Bacharach and junior Bryce McKelvie rebounded after a first-round loss to win a pair of matches in the consolation bracket. The duo opened with an 8-0 win over Jack Hogan and Floyd Penners and advanced all the way to the third round following a bye. However, once there, Bacharach and McKelvie ran into the tournament's No. 10 seeded team of Felipe Rios and Maxime Tchoutakian from Baylor, falling in a hard-fought match, 8-6.
Also getting into the action on Friday were the coaching tandem of Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer and Assistant Coach Michael Meyer, who opened with an 8-4 win over Georgetown's Marco Lam and Mac Rechan before falling to UCLA's Logan Staggs and Ryoto Tachi, 8-4.
Following a first-round loss, UC Davis signee David Goulak and his partner -- one of the tournament's No. 3 seeds -- have advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket with a pair of wins on Friday, and will meet UC Irvine's Sebastian Heim and Nico Mertens on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
Once competition wraps up in La Jolla, the Aggies return to dual match play at home on March 9, welcoming Fresno State to the Marya Welch Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. competition. UC Davis then teams up with Causeway rival Sacramento State to co-host the inaugural Golden State Invitational, featuring Saint Mary's Nevada, Portland, Green Bay, and UTSA, alongside the Aggies and Hornets, on March 11-13.
