Aggies rally behind Lam for 10th straight win

March 13, 2016

Box Score

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore Tommy Lam came back from two games down in the third and decisive set, winning four straight games to help the No. 73-ranked Aggies to a 4-3 win over the University of Portland and claim the title at the inaugural Golden State Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in Gold River, Calif.

The win lifted UC Davis to its 10th straight victory this season, improving the Aggies to 13-3 overall on the year and posting their first-ever win in the series with the Pilots in 11 chances according to records that date back to the 1996-97 season. Portland fell to 9-5 overall on the year with the defeat.

For the first time in nine matches, UC Davis lost the doubles point as the Pilots opened the match with wins at the top two doubles positions to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. The Aggies hadn't lost a doubles point since Air Force took two of three matches to start the day in a contest UC Davis would eventually win, 5-2, on Jan. 31.

That set the stage for an epic finish in singles with the Aggies having to win four of the six to continue their winning streak. Five of the six singles contests went the distance, with only Carlos Donat's, 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 6 ending in straight sets.

Junior Bryce McKelvie brought UC Davis even with his victory at No. 4, defeating Alex Wallace, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to extend his personal winning streak to 14 straight matches. Senior Brett Bacharach gave the Aggies the lead with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, win over Pierre Garcia at No. 3, and junior James Wade put his team on the brink of victory with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, triumph over Mathieu Garcia at No. 2, for a 3-1 advantage in the match.

Portland would rally, tying the match thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 6, turning the spotlight on the match at No. 5 singles between Lam and Felix Fan. Sporting a perfect 7-0 mark in duals this season, Lam jumped out to an early advantage, opening with a 6-4 first-set victory before Fan bounced back with a 6-0 win in the second.

The Pilots' freshman then threatened to put the Aggies away with a rally of his own, bouncing back to win four straight games after Lam went up 2-0 in the third, only to see the UC Davis sophomore answer with a rally of his own, winning four straight after being down a break to post the 6-4 win to end the match.

Following a break for final exams, the Aggies return to the courts on March 26 as they head to Reno to take on Nevada for a second time this season at 1 p.m. UC Davis then finishes up with four straight matches against Big West Conference opposition, beginning on April 2 at home against UC Riverside at Noon.
