Oct. 22, 2016 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The freshman tandem of Yurii Hanley and Eric Martel scored four goals each in an 18-5 victory over Wagner, hours after sophomore Riley Venne scored two goals to help No. 9 UC Davis hold on to a 7-6 win over No. 10 Harvard during Saturday's action at the Rodeo men's water polo tournament at Santa Clara.
The Aggies improve to 16-4 for the season. UC Davis and Harvard entered the Rodeo tournament as the field's two highest-ranked teams. The Aggies fell into a 3-1 hole after six minutes of play, but last-minute goals by sophomore
Marcus Anderson and Venne helped equalize to 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. Venne added another goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity early in the second, then
Cory Laidig and Hanley added man-up tallies in the second to craft a 6-4 halftime edge for the Aggies. However, the Crimson battled back with Noah Harrison's five-meter penalty goal to start the third. Harrison then assisted Grayson Judge for a goal at the 6:08 mark in the fourth to tie the score at 6-6. On the next possession, Anderson assisted sophomore
Ido Goldschmidt on yet another power play for the UC Davis go-ahead score. That one-goal margin held up the rest of the way as the Aggies avenged a season-opening loss to the Crimson. Hanley and Martel were two of six UC Davis players with multiple goals in the nightcap win over the Seahawks. Sophomore
Nick Coufal posted three assists to go with two goals while second-year
Brock Gordon posted two goals and two assists. Anderson and junior center
Morgan Olson-Fabbro also provided a pair of scores. UC Davis scored 12 unanswered to start the game: six in the first quarter, another four in the second to compile a 10-0 halftime lead, plus two more early in the third. Wagner freshman Matthew Miller scored the first of his three total goals at the 4:27 mark in the third to finally put his team on the board. Martel scored two of his goals in the first quarter, then hit the last goal of each of the third and fourth frames. Hanley, who assisted Martel's two second-half scores, netted his first after the 6-on-5 clock expired at 3:38 in the second quarter, added his second in the final minute of the third, then supplied two on even-strength situations in the finale. The Rodeo runs four days from Friday through Monday, with the Aggies taking part only on Days 2 and 3. UC Davis takes on Johns Hopkins at the San Jose State-hosted portion of the tournament at 8 a.m. on Sunday, then returns to SCU to take on No. 14 George Washington at 1:20 p.m. 2016 RODEO TOURNAMENT, DAY 2 Sullivan Aquatic Center • UC Davis games only.
