RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Erika Barr led a 1-2-3 finish for UC Davis in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while Ariel Maroon became the program's fourth straight Big West pole vault champion as the Aggie women's track and field team moved into second place at the conference championships on Friday at UC Riverside.

The three-time defending champion Aggies have 52 points through seven events and only trail first-place CSUN, which has 91 points. Cal Poly is third with 39 points and UC Santa Barbara is in fourth with 33.

The UC Davis men, behind third-place finishes from Ben Parodi in the hammer throw, Brandon Greenberg in the shot put and Trevor Halsted in the 10,000, have 27 points and are in fourth place after seven events. UCSB has the lead with 87 points, Long Beach State is second with 53.5 and Cal Poly is in third after scoring 46.

Finals were held in four field and two track events for both the men's and women's competitions, joining the multi-events results from last week's decathlon and heptathlon championships. The UC Davis women had six finishes good enough to advance to Saturday's finals after Friday's prelims while the men posted eight.

Barr and Maroon gave the Aggie women at least two conference titles on the first day for the fourth straight year with the steeplechase contingent's sweep reminiscent of the 1-2-3 showing for UC Davis in the 10,000 at the 2012 conference meet at UC Irvine.

Barr roared to a seven-second win on Friday afternoon, crossing in 10 minutes, 47.13 seconds while Clara MacLeod was second in 10:54.14. Rianna Goins closed the door on the sweep, holding off Anne Whitford of Cal Poly to cross in 11:02.13. UC Davis picked up 24 points in that event alone.

Maroon continued recent Aggie domination in the pole vault, joining Lauren Radke (2012), Emily Bush (2013) and current teammate Holly Tokar (2014) atop the podium in first place. Maroon clinched the title by clearing a personal-best 12 feet, 10 inches on her final attempt to move from No. 8 on the Aggies' all-time list to No. 3. It was a PR by six inches. She was the only competitor left after making her winning height before missing at 13-3.75.

Nicole Lane added five points for UC Davis with a fourth-place finish (37:54.65) in the 10,000 while Danielle Steffen, Catherine Li and Breanna Standifer added the remaining points from Friday with their performances in the field. Steffen took fifth in the pole vault (12-4), Li was seventh in the long jump (18-5-25) and Standifer finished seventh in the discus (154-10).

Ashley Marshall and Raquel Lambdin led UC Davis' qualifiers on the track. Marshall, the two-time defending Big West champion in the 100 (11.55), had the fastest time in the prelims on Friday while Lambdin had the top time in the 800 (2:10.08).

Marshall's time tied a 19-year-old stadium record at UC Riverside. She also moved on in the 200, winning her heat in 24.06 as she tries to win that event for the third straight year as well. Cekarri Nixon qualified with the second-best time overall (23.91).

Other advancers include Rianna Goins (800) and Emma Redick (400H).

The Aggie men were led by Greenberg, Parodi and Bender in the throws, who combined for 16 points in the hammer throw and shot put. Greenberg had a career-best finish at the Big West Championships with his third-place showing. He posted a mark of 56-9.50 which was barely off his PR of 56-10.25 from last year's conference meet. Parodi took seventh in the event on Friday with his mark of 52-6.50.

Parodi led the way in the hammer with his third-place finish of 191-6. It was the second-best mark of his career, his third time over 190 feet and close to his personal-best of 193-9 at the Causeway Classic two weeks ago. Bender added seventh-place points (177-01).

Halsted ran the grueling 10,000 for the first time in his Aggie career and came away with an impressive third-place finish that saw the top five placers cross within five seconds of each other. Bryan Guijarro of UCSB won in 31:09.72, the Gauchos' Anthony Ortolan was second in 31:10.52 and Halsed was close behind in 31:12.63. Teammate Amar Dholakia was among the leaders as well, taking fifth in 31:19.04 and helping UC Davis tally nine points in the race.

Miguel Aceves was eighth in the steeplechase for UC Davis' final points on Friday.

Nathan Strum helped pace the Aggies' qualifiers on the track, moving on in both the 800 and 1,500. He was part of a strong showing by UC Davis in the 800 which included Alex Grigoriev, Trevor Ehlenbach and Cody Nguyen who all advanced as well.

Marcus Johnson, the defending champion in the 100, will try to repeat on Saturday after qualifying in 10.71 during Friday's prelims. Matt Moreno (200) and Jason Chandler (400H) added the final qualifying marks for UC Davis on Friday.

Saturday's program features finals in the remaining field events and all of the remaining track races, including both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The Aggie men are defending champions in the short relay while the women own the fastest time in the Big West this year.

Competition in the field starts at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer while the events on the track start at 2 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
