LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Running the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time as an Aggie, Erika Barr turned in one of the best performances in program history on Friday when she won the event at the UCLA Legends Invitational at Drake Stadium for the UC Davis women's track and field team.
Barr's win was one of two at the first day of the two-day meet for UC Davis which picked up a first-place on the men's side with Trevor Halsted in the 5,000.
Friday was a busy day for the UC Davis track and field program which sent athletes to meets at UCLA, Stanford and San Francisco State. Shane Ryan highlighted the Aggies' showing at SFSU, winning the high jump while Ariel Maroon had an impressive afternoon in the pole vault.
Barr, a junior from Simi Valley, California, ran a 2,000-meter version of the steeplechase at the Aggie Open in early March but Friday marked her first collegiate race at the standard 3,000-meter distance. She won the race in 10 minutes, 27.33 seconds, debuting her at No. 3 on the program's all-time leaders list. Teammates Rianna Goins was fourth in 11:09.89.
Halsted, who ranks third all-time at UC Davis in 14:14.05, challenged his PR at UCLA on Friday, crossing the finish line in 14:16.92. He beat four Bruins runners and finished first by almost seven seconds.
Other highlights at UCLA on the men's side came from Ben Parodi (178 feet, 2 inches) and Matthew Bender (177-9) who were second and third, respectively, in the discus. Veronica Smart (173-08) was third in the women's hammer.
Ryan was a first-place finisher for the Aggies at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, winning the high jump with a mark of 6-6.25. The women's team picked up a strong showing from Maroon in the pole vault who finished third after clearing 12-4. It was a PR by 2.5 inches that jumped her from 10th to eighth all-time at UC Davis.
At Stanford, Morgan Bertsch, a freshman member on the Aggie women's basketball team, made her debut in the high jump and finished in the collegiate division with a mark of 5-5.75.
UC Davis will be in action at all three meets on Saturday as well.
