Lambdin wins 800, Marshall takes 200 at Mt. SAC

Bryan Clay Invitational | Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - Raquel Lambdin won the 800-meter run at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays for the second consecutive year while teammates Trevor Halsted and Erika Barr had big PRs in the 5,000 and steeplechase, respectively, as the UC Davis track and field distance standouts shined for UC Davis on Friday. The sprinters had a strong showing from senior Ashley Marshall who won the 200-meter dash in a wind-aided time of 23.18 seconds.

Lambdin won last year's race in 2 minutes, 6.47 seconds while beating a field of 100 runners and moving to No. 2 on the Aggies' all-time leaders list. History repeated itself on Friday afternoon when Lambdin, a senior from Camarillo, finished first among 45 runners in the collegiate/open section of the race at Mt. SAC.

Lambdin raced in Friday's first section, finishing in front of Kimberley Ficenec of Alabama (2:05.97) across the finish line. Her PR solidified her No. 2 all-time position. She trails only Lauren Wallace who went 2:02.91 at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Halsted and Barr provided two more highlights for the Aggies. Halsted, a junior from Davis, became only the second UC Davis runner to break 14 minutes in the 5,000 when he finished sixth in his section in 13:58.78. That was a huge career-best for Halsted whose previous best was 14:14.05 at the 2014 Stanford Invitational.

Friday's time also moved him from third to second on the Aggies' all-time list. He joins school-record holder Jonathan Peterson (13:46.66) under the 14-minute barrier.

Barr brought home another impressive showing for UC Davis as she continues to shine during her first year running the steeplechase. Barr, a junior from Simi Valley, had a nearly 18-second PR, breaking her previous best of 10:27.33 at UCLA two weeks ago by crossing the finish line at Mt. SAC in 10:09.55. Barr finished sixth in her section while jumping from third to second on the all-time list. Katie Fry (9:58.97, 2013) holds the school record.

Clara MacLeod was fifth during her steeplechase race on Thursday evening in 10:34.70, jumping her from seventh to fifth all-time at UC Davis. Her previous PR was 10:48.22 from last week's Mesa Track and Field Classic in Arizona.

Marshall edged Deajah Stevens of the College of Sequoias (23.19) in the first heat of the collegiate/open section of the 200. The time held up over the remaining six heats delivering Marshall a win over the field of 55 other runners. Marshall's time is faster than her school record time of 23.25 from the 2013 Big West Championships but will not supplant that mark because it was wind-aided. She'll race on Saturday in the invitational section of the 100.

Emma Redick was 10th in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.76, another strong mark this season for the Aggie sophomore from Santa Barbara.

Nathan Strum had a strong race in the 1,500, leading four Aggies in the event with his 15th-place time of 3:49.21. Nicholas Ratto (3:49.57), Trevor Ehlenbach (3:51.74) and Austin Goins (4:01.12) followed him in the standings.

Marc Toney tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 16 feet, 0.75 inches while Jason Chandler took ninth in the 400 hurdles in 52.62.

UC Davis will continue action on Saturday when it competes at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State. Saturday's Woody Wilson Classic on campus has been cancelled.
