EL MACERO, Calif. - UC Davis successfully defended its title at the El Macero Classic while Aggie junior Luke Vivolo won his first collegiate tournament with an eight-shot victory on Sunday afternoon at El Macero Country Club.
The 59th-ranked Aggies, who finished 1-over 865 on their home course, posted a 10-shot win over rival Sacramento State and Marquette while Utah Valley (+17) placed fourth in the nine-team tournament.
Vivolo enjoyed his best tournament as an Aggie. He shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday for a career-best 54-hole total of 10-under 206. Vivolo's previous best showing was a third-place at last year's Bandon Dunes Championship in Oregon while his best score was a 1-under 212 at that same event.
Taylor Knoll of Sacramento State was 2 under while Mitchell Martin of Cal Poly was 1 under to round out the top three. They were the only other players to break par.
Vivolo's win was the largest win by an Aggie player in their NCAA Div. I era and one of the largest in program history.
"I'm very happy and proud of Luke in getting his first college win," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "There is no one that works harder or is more dedicated than him and he deserves all of the fruits of his labor."
Junior Patrick Soli added his first top-10 performance as an Aggie, placing 10th at 3 over. Senior Mike Brockington tied for 12th at 5 over, senior Matt Seramin was 6 over and tied for 16th and freshman Ryan Han tied for 20th at 7 over.
Evan Knight placed 35th at 12 over to lead three Aggies playing as individuals. Will Brink was a shot back and tied for 36th while freshman Jesse Bratz tied for 43rd at 15 over.
Players battled winds for the first time this weekend and scores reflected the challenge. Only four players shot par or better and just one -- Patrick Sanchez of Marquette who carded a 71 -- was in red numbers.
Vivolo had rounds of 67-66 to open the tournament but was 5 over at his turn on Sunday morning. But he gained four of those shots back on his final nine holes, collecting four birdies including three in his last four, to come in with a 73.
Soli shot 73 as well, playing the front side even and finishing with three birdies on the day. Brockington carded a 75, going just 1 over on his back nine. Seramin had two early birdies to go 2 under before finishing with a 76, and Han was just 1 over on the back nine at El Macero Country Club while shooting 78.
The win was the first for UC Davis this season and its second straight at its own tournament. Vivolo also gave the Aggies their second straight medalist in the event, joining Matt Hansen who won last year's title.
"I'm very proud of our guys," said Williams. "This is a great win. Regardless whether it's your home course or not, it's hard to win so this is a very special day for UC Davis golf. We will take a few days to enjoy this win, as we should, and then we will get started preparing for the Big West Championship and see how we can improve on your performance this weekend."
The Big West Championship will be held at San Luis Obispo Country Club on Apr. 26-28.
