DAVIS, Calif. -- The No. 68 UC Davis men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Big West Conference play, taking the doubles point and winning four of the six singles matches to hand No. 49 Cal Poly a 5-2 defeat on Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

The Aggies won their sixth straight against Division I opposition, improving to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in league play, defeating the Mustangs for the first time in 10 chances at the Division I level. Cal Poly, which had won five straight entering Friday's match, fell to 14-8 overall and 3-1 in the Big West.

UC Davis' 14 victories matched last season's win total (14-11) and a win in any of its final three contests would give the Aggies the most since they finished 15-3 in 1993.

"This was a tough, team win against a good Cal Poly squad today," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "I'm very happy with the energy, the effort, and, of course, the result. I'm hopeful that we can bring the same again tomorrow against UC Santa Barbara."

For the fifth time in the last seven contests, UC Davis jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead, posting wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. The duo of Brett Bacharach and Bryce McKelvie defeated Garrett Auproux, 6-1, and was followed by a 6-3 win by Tommy Lam and James Wade over the Mustangs' Karl Enander and Lucas Lesoeur, winning for the fourth straight time as a pair and improving to 10-3 in duals this season.

The Aggies then came up big in singles, where four of the six contests went to three sets. Sophomore Eli Whittle extended his personal winning streak to seven with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, win over Axel Damiens at No. 6, while freshman Everett Maltby also came through in three sets, downing Naveen Beasley, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, to clinch a win at No. 5.

Sophomores Bryce McKelvie and James Wade then wrapped up the win with a pair of straight-set victories. McKelvie defeated Lesoeur, 7-6, 7-5, while Wade handed Auproux a, 6-4, 6-1, loss, clinching his team-best 12th dual match victory of the year.

UC Davis closes out the home portion of its 2015 spring schedule on Saturday (April 11) at Noon, welcoming No. 65 UC Santa Barbara to the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
