Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships Draw

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore James Wade rallied back from a set down and 4-1 deficits in each of the final two sets at the No. 1 singles spot, gutting out a three-set victory over Rice's Srikar Alla, and lifting the No. 70 Aggies to a 4-3 neutral court victory over the No. 75 Owls on Thursday morning at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, California.

"That was just an unreal comeback against a very good Rice team today," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "James was unreal himself, coming back from a set down and facing deficits in the final two sets. It just shows the kind of competitive attitude our program wants to be known for."

UC Davis won its third straight dual, improving to 10-3 overall on the season in a prelude to this weekend's 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships in La Jolla, California. Rice fell to 7-9 overall, dropping the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The Aggies claimed wins at the top two doubles positions to claim an early 1-0 lead in the match, but watched the Owls quickly rally with three straight-set wins at the bottom of the singles ladder to take a 3-1 lead in the match, but UC Davis would not go quietly.

Junior Brett Bacharach jumpstarted the Aggies' final kick, winning his sixth consecutive singles contest with a 7-6, 6-4, win over Adam Gustafsson, and sophomore Alec Adamson tied the match at three-all with a straight-set, 6-2, 7-6, win over Jamie Malik at No. 2.

That brought it all down on the shoulders of Wade, who was playing his third match of the year at the top spot in the UC Davis lineup. Alla came out firing for Rice, taking the first set, 6-2, and threatened to end it early, taking a 4-1 lead in the second, before Wade rallied to win the next five games and even up the match with a 6-4 win.

Alla continued to apply pressure, jumping out to a commanding 4-1 lead in the third set as well, but Wade, once again, dug deep for another rally, coming all the way back to clinch the match for himself and the Aggies with a 7-5 win in the third.

Following the dramatic comeback, UC Davis turned its attention to the draws at the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships, and finished day one with a pair of wins. Just hours after helping the Aggies clinch the doubles point against Rice, the duo of Adamson and Adam Levie came through with an 8-2 win in their first round match-up against Yousef Benhamida and Ryan Seggerman.

They will face either the UCLA duo of Nishanth Yamani and Ryoto Tachi or the ninth-seeded tandem of Michael Calderone and Bojan Szumanski on Friday at 1:15 p.m.

Sophomore Jesse Ross and partner Max Mereles also won their first-round contest, defeating Andrew Buckner and Jesse Steinberg, 8-2.

Three Aggie tandems, plus the team of assistant coach Michael Meyer and former Aggie great Toki Sherbakov, open play on Friday at 8:45 a.m. Complete draws for the championships are available at http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=153473#&&s=7Draws2.
