March 12, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore men's tennis player Alec Adamson and junior women's golfer Andrea Wong have been named the 2014 Big West Conference Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year from UC Davis, the league office announced.
The Aggies' honorees were recognized with award winners from the other Big West institutions at a breakfast in Anaheim, California, in conjunction with the conference men's and women's basketball tournaments on Thursday morning.
Adamson has helped lead a resurgence for the Aggies' men's tennis team, helping UC Davis to its best Division I season with a 14-11 overall record last season. He spent most of his freshman year at the top of the Aggies' lineup, posting a 22-11 overall record (tied for third in the Big West) and a 14-9 mark in dual match play, including a 9-5 mark at No. 1 singles, and earned All-Big West first-team honors in both singles and doubles alongside partner Adam Levie.
His 22 overall singles wins rank fourth on the school's single-season list since 1996-97, while his 22 doubles victories are the second-most in a season in that same span. This past summer, he also claimed the singles consolation title at the USTA National Collegiate Summer Championships.
Off the court, Adamson is a member of the Dean's List and a recipient of the John Wooden Scholarship, while also serving as a group leader for the Athletes in Action Men's Leadership Training. An economics major, he hopes to play tennis professionally before possibly pursuing his MBA and getting involved in a career related to the stock market.
A two-time All-Big West Conference selection, Wong has helped lead the UC Davis women's golf team to back-to-back conference titles -- part of a run that has seen the Aggies claim the last five Big West crowns. She was named the Big West Freshman of the Year and finished second overall at the conference championships in 2013, finishing third on the team with a 74.9 scoring average and posting six top-20 finishes. Last season, the San Francisco native competed in 13 events for UC Davis, including a season-best eighth-place finish at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, and was named to the Big West All-Academic Team in the spring.
Wong was named All-Big West honorable mention last spring while helping lead UC Davis into another NCAA Regional appearance.
Off the course, she is involved with Camp Kasem, a camp for children with a parent who has been diagnosed with cancer, and is also a volunteer/mentor with The First Tee of Greater Sacramento, an organization that provides educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. She has also played the moon guitar and has performed with the Purple Silk Foundation/Great Wall Youth Orchestra.
An American studies major with a minor in psychology, Wong is interested in pursuing a career in event planning, marketing, or product management.
