WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - Upperclassmen led the way for the UC Davis men's golf team during Saturday's final round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Kings' Course as junior
Luke Vivolo fired a 5-under 67 to tie for eighth while senior
Matt Seramin carded a 68 as the Aggies finished 13th at the high-caliber tournament.
Vivolo strung together three spectacular rounds against a field loaded with many of the top collegiate golfers. He spent all week in red numbers, opening with rounds of 69 on Thursday and Friday before ending the event at 10-under 205. Vivolo was only one of two unranked golfers to finish in the top 10.
Seramin improved his scoring each day, following up a second-round 72 to go four shots under par on Saturday. That propelled him 16 spots on the final leaderboard, tying him for 43rd at 3 under. Freshman
Jesse Bratz tied for 68th at 2 over after shooting 77 in the last round, freshman
Ryan Han had an 80 and tied for 78th at 5 over, and sophomore
Nicolas Noya tied for 87th at 8 over after ending with a 77.
The tournament field was one of the deepest the Aggies will face all spring, showcasing 13 teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50, including three in the top 10. The final team scores reflected that high quality of golf. Arizona State, ranked 25th, rallied to win the event with a 38-under team score, edging No. 19 Washington (-36), No. 14 USC (-35) and No. 2 Oregon (-35). Seven teams shot at least 31 under.
UC Davis was 1 over in the final round, shooting 10 under for the three-day tournament. The Aggies beat one team ranked ahead of them in the standings after No. 48 Oregon State finished 5 under.
Vivolo's final round was sparked by tremendous play on the front side of the 7,074-yard course. He used four birdies and five pars to play it 4 under and had six birdies on the day. Vivolo tied for third among all players with 18 birdies and tied for the tournament lead by playing the par-4 holes a total of 7 under.
Seramin highlighted his day with an eagle on the par-5, 513-yard fourth hole along with three birdies and 13 pars. He had just one bogey. Seramin was 1 over after eight holes but 5 under the rest of the way.
Bratz played the front nine at par, Han was 3 over on those same holes and Noya was even on the course's final nine holes.
College golf's top-ranked player, Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington, finished 17 under to claim a two-shot victory over Maverick McNealy, ranked seventh, from Stanford.
UC Davis will return to the mainland and prepare to co-host The Prestige at PGA WEST with Stanford on Feb. 16-18 at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. Arizona State will bring its tournament title from this weekend to the event and will be joined by Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, UCLA, Oregon, USC and Washington. Nine of the 18 teams from the Ameri Ari Invitational will be at The Prestige at PGA WEST.
