CHICO, Calif. - Tori Edwards scored 2,684 points and is in fourth place after the first day of the heptathlon on Thursday while
Shane Ryan tallied 3,428 points and is fifth at the midway point of the decathlon as the UC Davis multi-event specialists opened well at the 30th annual Chico Multi Classic at Chico State.
The duo are part of six UC Davis athletes competing in the top flights of both events at the season-opening meet. Veteran
Murphy Nicholson is in ninth place of the heptathlon with 2,478 points while freshman Julia Haselhuhn scored 2,183 points through the first four events and is in 11th place.
Freshman
Drake Foote is in eighth place in the decathlon after tallying 3,314 points while
Hawk Hammer has 2,832 points and is in 10th place.
Edwards and Nicholson each won their heats in the 100-meter hurdles, the heptathlon's first event. Edwards scored 813 points after crossing in 15.22 seconds while Nicholson was timed in 15.57 seconds for 768 points. Edwards was third overall while Nicholson was fifth.
Edwards was also third in the shot put and 200 while Nicholson tied for sixth in the high jump for another strong finish. Haselhuhn's best showing came in the high jump where she took seventh, scoring 588 points.
Humboldt State's Kate Earle leads the competition with 3,070 points.
Ryan tied for second in the high jump - his highest placing of the day - while scoring 758 points in the event before being timed in the 52.03 in the 400 for a fifth-place showing. Foote had a pair of second-place finishes during his first competition as an Aggie, picking up 693 points in the long jump and 758 in the high jump. Hammer was fifth in the shot put, scoring 558 points, for his highest finish.

"
Drake Foote opened up strong in the long jump and had a PR in the high jump with room to grow," he added. "We're improving on our marks that finished out season last year and are competing with confidence. We have a bunch of PRs for all of the athletes and are going into tomorrow with the mindset to compete and finish strong."
Phil Bailey of Chico State leads the decathlon with 3,854 points.
The Aggies will complete the Chico Multi Classic on Friday.
