DAVIS, Calif. -- Continuing to build upon one of the most successful starts in school history, the UC Davis men's tennis team continues to garner national attention, rising six spots to No. 64 in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's latest rankings released on Feb. 24.
Debuting with its highest Division I ranking in school history at No. 72 back on Feb. 3, the Aggies jumped two spots to No. 70 in the nation on Feb. 17 following a three-match sweep of Sacramento State (6-1), Saint Mary's (7-0), and Holy Names (7-0), before coming in at No. 64 this week.
Among those on the UC Davis schedule this season, California (No. 18), Stanford (No. 37), and Santa Clara (No. 66) are, currently, all among the top 75, while Big West Conference rivals UC Irvine (No. 60) and Cal Poly (No. 71) await later in the season.
The Aggies recently completed a stretch that saw them play six matches in the span of 10 days, posting a 5-1 record in those contests, with wins over Nevada (which was among those opponents nationally ranked during the first few weeks of the regular season) and Sonoma State last weekend. Thanks, in large part, to a six-match winning streak that is tied for the longest in the school's Division I history, UC Davis has won eight of its last nine overall -- three of those via a shutout -- and stand at 9-3 overall this spring, with two of its three losses coming against nationally ranked squads.
At the midway point of the spring season, sophomore James Wade and freshman Everett Maltby lead the team on the singles side with 18 victories overall, while Wade is tops on the team with an 8-2 mark in duals thus far. Maltby (7-2), who is currently riding a six-match winning streak, sophomore Bryce McKelvie (7-4), and sophomore Jesse Ross (7-3), are all tied for second on the team with seven wins in duals.
Following such a packed schedule, the Aggies break until Thursday (March 5), when they head to La Jolla, California, to participate in the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships as well as a pair of neutral site duals against Rice (March 5) and Villanova (March 8).
