DAVIS, Calif. - In a rare tennis doubleheader, No. 70 UC Davis bounced back from Saturday's result at San Francisco to dominate both of Sunday's non-conference home matches against Nevada and Sonoma State at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. In the first match of the day, the Aggies won all but one singles match to come-from behind and defeat the Wolf Pack, 5-2. After a brief break, the Aggies returned to action against Sonoma State, won all three doubles and every singles match to sweep the Seawolves, 7-0.
"The way everyone handled the brutal conditions, because of the wind, is one of the proudest moments I have had as a coach. Everyone kept their composure, played through the conditions and earned two wins against competitive teams," said UC Davis head coach Eric Steidlmayer.
The Aggies improved their record to 9-3 while Nevada and Sonoma State both fell to 1-5.
On a blustery day in Davis - winds consistently topped 30 miles per hour throughout the day - it was the Aggies who mastered the elements against the Wolf Pack once singles competition began. Even though Nevada won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead, UC Davis owned the singles round once action began.
Bryce McKelvie and Everett Maltby each made quick work of Nevada's Ryan Andrada and Peter O'Donovan at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. The former won his straight-sets singles match by a 6-2, 6-3 score, while the latter dispatched his opponent, 6-3, 6-4.
Brett Bacharach and Eli Whittle each recorded three-set victories in similar fashion at No. 3 and No. 6. After winning the first set, each fell in the second set of their respective matches before pulling away in the third to add another two team points for the Aggies.
Bacharach took the first set, 6-1, and fell 3-6 in the second before ending UC Davis' dual against the Wolf Pack - his singles match was the last to finish - by taking the third set against Fernando Sunago, 6-3.
Set one was captured by Whittle, 7-6, before he fell to Robert Allan in the following frame. In the third set, Allan stood no chance of winning his singles matchup once Whittle recorded two service breaks en route to a 6-1 set victory.
James Wade also competed in a three-set battle, but the events that took place throughout his singles match, at No. 1, differed from his teammates Bacharach and Whittle. Unlike his fellow Aggies who split their first two sets, Wade lost the first set to Moez Chargui, 2-6, before storming back and winning the following two by a 6-0, 6-3 score. Once Wade's match became official, the Aggies passed the four-point threshold to win their first of two matches throughout the afternoon.
After a brief break, the Aggies returned to the courts and continued playing stellar tennis against Sonoma State. Even though the Seawolves arrived to campus with fresh legs, UC Davis easily won all three doubles contests.
Wade and Adam Levie topped SSU's top doubles team in Phil Holbrook and Noah Lee, 8-5; paired with Jessie Ross, Alec Adamson won his second doubles match by downing Logan Liddell and Blaine Mengert, 8-2; Whittle and Everett Maltby completed the doubles sweep with their 8-1 win over Sullivan Roche and Matt Weeber.
For Whittle, that doubles result marked his third win in as many matches played on Sunday.
A highly competitive day on the courts ended with the Aggies recording straight-set victories in all six singles matchups against the Seawolves. Of the 12 collective sets played, only three were won by a lone service break. The rest were won by three or more games.
UC Davis will return to action on March 5 to compete in another two events on the same day. In addition to facing Rice in a neutral-site dual, the Aggies will also have its doubles teams compete at the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship. That 10 a.m. dual and all-day competition will take place in La Jolla, Calif.
