DAVIS, Calif. -- A busy weekend came to a quick end on Monday afternoon as the No. 72 UC Davis men's tennis team cruised past visiting Holy Names, 7-0, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The victory was the sixth-consecutive win for the Aggies, tying the mark for the longest winning streak at the Division I level, as they improved to 7-2 overall and remained unbeaten at home (3-0) this season. The Hawks, who had their originally scheduled season opener at Fresno State rained out, fell to 0-1 on the year.
UC Davis posted its second shutout in as many days following its 7-0 win at Saint Mary's on Sunday, winning all nine matches against Holy Names on Monday. It is the first back-to-back shutouts for the Aggies since blanking Eastern Washington and Hawai'i-Hilo on March 24-25 last season -- a feat they accomplished twice in 2014.
Coinciding with its winning streak, UC Davis claimed the doubles point for the sixth consecutive dual, dropping no more than four games in any of the three doubles contests. The run included an 8-0 shutout pitched by sophomore James Wade and Tommy Lam at the No. 2 spot to claim their seventh win as a doubles tandem and their team-best sixth dual match doubles victory this season.
The Aggies then rushed right through singles play, claiming all six in straight sets, including a win by junior Adam Levie, who dropped only one game in defeating the Hawks' Patrick Johnson, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 position for his first dual match win of the year. Freshman Tommy Lam also recorded his first dual match win this season with a 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 6 over Jonah Tahilan.
Sophomore Jesse Ross extended his team-best winning streak to five matches with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Rafael Martinez at No. 3, improving to a team-best 6-2 in duals. The versatile Ross has won at least one match at four different spots in the lineup this season.
In his first career match at No. 2 singles, Bryce McKelvie downed Matt Halligan, 6-2, 6-1, to improve to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in dual matches this season, tying teammates James Wade (15-7) and Everett Maltby (15-5) for the most overall wins on the team.
Alec Adamson at No. 1 and Eli Whittle at No. 4 completed the sweep, defeating Tracy Beblie (7-6, 6-4) and Brook Workeneh (6-3, 6-4), respectively.
The Aggies return to action with three more matches this weekend, heading to the Bay Area to take on San Francisco on Friday (Feb. 20) at Noon at the Olympic Club, before returning home to host Nevada and Sonoma State on Sunday (Feb. 22) in a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
