Nov. 21, 2015 USAFA, Colo. - Freshman attacker Ido Goldschmidt scored seven goals while freshman utility Sasa Antunovic added three, leading top-seeded and ninth-ranked UC Davis from a 6-3 deficit to a 14-13 win over seventh-seeded and 20th-ranked Cal Baptist in the first Western Water Polo Association championship semifinal game Saturday at Cadet Natatorium.
The Aggies improve to 18-7 overall and advance to the WWPA title game, the winner of which earns the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship at UCLA in two weeks.
Goldschmidt scored one goal in the first, one in the second, three in a wild third quarter, then two more -- including the game-winner -- in the fourth. His seven goals are the most by a UC Davis player since Chris Richardson scored that many at Santa Clara on November 11, 2012. It is also the most in the WWPA tournament since Mike Gotelli netted seven against Whittier 18 years ago to the day.
Antunovic, who earlier this week was named as the WWPA Freshman of the Year, scored all three of his goals in a 6-1 run that flipped a 6-3 deficit at the five-minute mark in the second quarter into a 9-7 lead at the same point in the third.
Senior utility David Ring, freshman utility Tanner Shore and junior attacker Teddy Forte each scored three goals for the Lancers. Ring and Shore each found the back of the net in the first to push CBU to a 4-2 lead. Ring then assisted center Ryan Penney at the 6:10 mark while Shore scored on a short lob to extend the Lancer edge to 6-3 with 5:06 remaining in first half.
The Aggies hit two goals to finish the second quarter to cut their halftime deficit to two. Antunovic connected from the four spot after Goldschmidt's field block with 1:47 left, then Goldschmidt fired a goal through the grip of CBU goalie Joseph Moorman about 40 seconds later, bringing the score to 6-5 at the break.
Antunovic scored back-to-back in a span of less than a minute to start the third. He converted an assist from senior utility and WWPA Player of the Year Sean Grab to start the half, tying the contest at 6-6. After a Brent Teraoka missile restored the lead to CBU on the next possession, Antunovic buried a shot from seven meters out to equalize at 7-7. Goldschmidt's lob pushed the Aggies to an 8-7 advantage, their first lead since drawing first blood in the opening minute. Redshirt freshman Riley Venne assisted junior Jacob Ley at two meters to extend the lead to 9-7, UC Davis' largest lead to that point.
Nonetheless, CBU bounced back to tie the contest for a fourth time. Ring's backhander and Shore's putback on a friendly bar-out bounce tied the game at 9-9 with 4:17 still left in the third quarter. Goldschmidt answered back with consecutive goals, first on another lob then again when Antunovic assisted him in transition, setting the Aggies to an 11-9 lead. Ring struck again with a backhanded sweep shot with 3:19 left, reducing the UC Davis edge back to one.
After 10 goals in the first five minutes after the halftime intermission, both defenses locked down for the final three in the third.
The pattern continued into the fourth after Forte won inside water at two meters and converted an assist from Teraoka to begin the frame, tying the game for a fifth time. Goldschmidt hit a second-chance goal at the 5:41 mark, goalkeeper Spencer Creed made a big save to stop a CBU power play with 5:01 left, then junior Cory Laidig attacked a shooting lane with 4:31 remaining to put UC Davis up by a 13-11 margin. Again, CBU clawed its way back: Forte and Tucker Angelo hit perimeter shorts to knot the contest at 13-13.
Goldschmidt broke the tie for good with his shot from up top with 2:27 remaining. Creed made another key save with 39 seconds remaining to stop a Teraoka bomb from six meters out. That allowed UC Davis to run out a full shot clock on its last possession, then deny the Lancers any looks for the final ticks.
The Aggies will face the winner of the UC San Diego-Air Force semifinal. They look for their first WWPA championship and NCAA berth since 1997.
