Oct. 25, 2015 SANTA CLARA, Calif. - UC Davis freshman Ido Goldschmidt totaled eight goals in Sunday's portion of the Rodeo men's collegiate water polo tournament at Sullivan Aquatic Center, starting with a hat trick in a 12-7 morning victory against No. 17 St. Francis then following with a career-high five goals in the 10-9 overtime loss to No. 19 Harvard in the afternoon.
The 10th-ranked Aggies went 3-1 at the Santa Clara-hosted tournament to move to 14-7 for the year.
Goldschmidt led UC Davis in scoring in each game. Fellow freshman Sasa Antunovic added two goals against SFC and another against Harvard. Sophomore utility Cory Laidig was the only other Aggie to score in both Sunday contests, hitting one in each game.
UC Davis took a 4-2 lead on the Terriers after Antunovic converted a power play with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter. Senior Bora Dimitrov and freshman Nikita Prokhin each scored to bring SFC back to a 4-4 tie before Aggie senior Sean Grab reclaimed the lead with his goal in the final minute before halftime. UC Davis defended a 5-on-6 on the final possession to hold a 5-4 edge at the break.
Dimitrov scored his second goal to equalize at 5-5 to start the third quarter, but Antunovic answered on the next trip down to ignite a 6-1 Aggie stretch that lasted into the final minutes of the fourth. UC Davis again held off two SFC power plays in the fourth to protect its lead.
Goldschmidt scored one goal in the first quarter, two in the second, then one each in the third and fourth for his career-high output against Harvard. However, the Aggies saw their 5-3 halftime edge wither to a 5-5 tie within the first minute after the intermission. Goldschmidt and Laidig then responded with two goals to take a 7-5 lead, only to see the Crimson battle back to a 7-7 lock at the 5:52 mark in the fourth.
Harvard senior Noah Harrison, who scored the 5-5 equalizer in the third, hit two goals in the fourth quarter, including one with 1:19 left in regulation that evened the tally to 9-9. Junior attacker Joey Colton, who scored the game-winner against Air Force earlier in the day, delivered the go-ahead in the second overtime segment to propel the Crimson to the upset win.
This is the third consecutive year that UC Davis has suffered an upset loss during the Rodeo tournament. The Aggies lost to Harvard and Brown during the 2013 edition, then fell to Brown and unranked Bucknell last season.
The Aggies host Fresno Pacific for a Western Water Polo Association game on Friday. Game time at Schaal Aquatics Center is 7 p.m.
