Jan. 21, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. -- A stellar start to the spring season has earned UC Davis sophomore James Wade a share of Big West Conference Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Wednesday.
It is the second career weekly honor for the San Marino, California, native after earning his first on Feb. 19 of last season. He shares this week's honor with UC Irvine's Sebastian Heim.
Wade opened his dual match season with a perfect 2-0 record in singles play, posting a pair of three-set victories as the Aggies battled No. 30 Stanford and former Big West rival Pacific. He posted the Aggies' lone point against the nationally ranked Cardinal with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, win over Stanford's John Morrissey -- the No. 1 singles player for the Cardinal last season -- at the No. 2 position to start the week.
He also teamed with freshman Tommy Lam to battle the Stanford duo of Nolan Paige and Yale Goldberg to a 5-5 draw in an unfinished No. 3 doubles match.
Wade followed those performances up with another three-set win over Pacific's Miguel Diaz, shutting down the Tigers' No. 2 singles star, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3, and helping the Aggies end a four-match losing streak against their former league foe. Diaz was the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and an all-conference honorable mention choice in 2014.
After battling No. 15 California to open the week, UC Davis continues a four-match road swing this weekend, heading to Southern California for a pair of matches in Los Angeles. The Aggies take on Loyola Marymount on Friday (Jan. 23) at 2 p.m., before meeting Grand Canyon on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 10 a.m. Both matches will be played at the LMU Tennis Center.
