SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Four lead changes took place throughout 70 minutes of regulation field hockey in Thursday night's non-conference contest at Allison North Stadium in Springfield, Missouri, before the host Missouri State Bears punched in the game-winning goal 9:15 into overtime to defeat UC Davis, 5-4.
In addition to snapping the team's three-match win streak against Missouri State, Thursday's result pushed UC Davis' overall record to 0-2. The Bears, playing their first home game of the year and inaugural one at its new facility, improved their record to 1-3.
Forced to wait an additional three hours due to travel delays experienced by game officials en route to campus, UC Davis showed zero signs of rust by scoring the first goal of the match.
In the 14th minute, Agustina Singh recorded her first goal of the year when she beat Bears goalkeeper Megan Drew to her right to give UC Davis an early 1-0 lead.
Even though Missouri State scored the final two goals of the first half - one found the back of the cage in the 34th minute, the other gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half - the Aggies stormed back to regain the lead nine minutes into the second half
Kristin Rodgers earned her team-high second goal of the season, on the first shot recorded by either team after halftime, when she beat Drew on a one-on-one breakaway scoring opportunity.
In the 44th minute, Jamie Garcia helped the Aggies regain the lead when she pushed a shot through Drew's legs to push the score to 3-2.
Three minutes later, the Bears evened the score at three apiece. As was the case with the events that took place immediately after halftime, UC Davis regained the lead once again when Kate Young scored a goal on her first-ever shot as an Aggie, in her inaugural collegiate appearance.
Unlike a UC Davis squad that saw four different players score a goal, one player, Holly Scherer, was primarily responsible for Missouri State's offense.
In addition to scoring two game-tying goals, Scherer was also responsible for the game-winning swing. In all, she posted the final three goals for Missouri State and led all Bears with five shots.
Led by Singh who finished with a team-high four shots - all were on goal - Garcia and Rodgers took three and two shots respectively, and finished with two shots on goal apiece. Lauren Copeland and Kat Jackson each took one shot, Missouri State recorded a save on both occasions.
UC Davis goalkeeper Beth Lee ended her evening with seven saves compared to her Bears counterpart who finished with four. However, Drew was bailed out by her teammates three times throughout the evening when her backline prevented three Aggie shots from entering the cage.
The Aggies will continue the first of two season-long road trips Saturday morning when they visit Saint Louis. Start time for that non-conference affair is set for 11 a.m. (PT). A live stats link for that match is available at ucdavisaggies.com.
