SMITHFIELD, R.I. - A gutsy performance from UC Davis in Thursday's non-conference match from the Bryant Turf Complex in Smithfield, Rhode Island, helped the Aggies begin their three-match road trip in exciting fashion when Lauren Copeland scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute to lead her team to a 2-1 win.
The goal is the first scored by sophomore midfielder since joining the program last season.
In her inaugural year as an Aggie, the Fallbrook, California, native recorded two shots - both on goal. Against Bryant, Copeland took two shots with her game-winning swing also doubling as her only shot on goal.
"Lauren was the player of the game for us. She was solid both on attack and on defense. It was fitting that she scored the game-winner," said UC Davis head coach Tiffany Huisman following the match.
UC Davis' sudden-death triumph, its first since defeating Stanford at home last season, improves the team's record to 3-5. Bryant falls to 2-6 with the loss.
Victorious in its last two matches, the Aggies will look to secure their first three-match win streak since 2012 - UC Davis defeated Saint Louis, La Salle and Bryant in its first three home matches of the season - when the team visits UMass Lowell Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (PT).
Scoreless at halftime, the Aggies struck first on one of their 12 penalty corners when Kayla Wigney and Agustina Singh set up Sophia Lisaius' second goal of the season.
Lisaius' blast beat Bulldog goalkeeper Megan Hancock far side in the 40th minute to lift her team to a 1-0 lead.
That advantage was brief, however, because Bryant rebounded less than two minutes later by scoring a goal of its own to even the score once again.
It was then when the day's epic dual began to take shape, as neither team was able to snap the tie throughout the remaining 18:04 of regulation.
Per NCAA overtime rules, each team fielded seven players for the start of the first 15-minute overtime session. Even though the Aggies who recorded the only two shots in overtime, the score remain untouched - forcing another 7-v-7, overtime period.
Unlike the first OT, one dominated by UC Davis, it was Bryant that jumped out to a strong start in double overtime.
In a five-minute timespan that was dominated by the Bulldogs, the Aggies defended four penalty corners and withstood four shots before taking their first shot of double OT.
Once that took place, Bryant was severely tested on defense in the following minutes as Hancock was forced to make saves on each of UC Davis' first two shots. By deflecting the Aggies' third unanswered shot in front of their cage, the Bulldogs alleviated Hancock from making another remarkable save to continue action.
One minute after that initial flurry of Aggie shots, it was Copeland who crushed the hearts of every Bryant fan in attendance when she ended the match on her second shot of the afternoon.
Buoyed by an 8-2 advantage in the second half, and responsible for both attempts in overtime, UC Davis outshot Bryant 18-11. The Aggies also took 12 penalty corners compared to the Bulldogs' 10, including all six recorded by either team in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Makheila MacDonald stopped six shots for UC Davis to earn her second victory of the season.
With Thursday's result, UC Davis remains unbeaten in its three all-time matchups against the Bulldogs, including two victories earned at the Bryant Turf Complex.
In its inaugural visit on Sept. 6, 2011, the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs by a 3-1 score. When the Bulldogs visited Davis the following year, UC Davis collected another victory by an identical score.
