DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis scored two second half goals in its inaugural NorPac game of the season against Cal, but the Golden Bears were able to extend their two-goal halftime lead by scoring another three within that same timespan to defeat the Aggies, 5-2, at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
Friday's result drops UC Davis to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league play; Cal improves to 5-2 and 1-0.
Even though Cal outshot the Aggies 8-5 in the first half, UC Davis still remained within striking distance at halftime down by only two goals.
Of those five UC Davis shots, Cal goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson recorded three saves. Her counterpart, UC Davis' Makheila MacDonald, posted her only save of the day in the first half.
As was the case when the game started, the Golden Bears scored five minutes into the second half. Of Cal's first three unanswered goals, forward Lara Kruggel was responsible for two.
Eleven minutes after Cal enhanced its halftime advantage, the Aggies scored their first goal of the match when redshirt freshman Eden Borsack found the back of the cage in the 53rd minute.
On a play that originated from one of UC Davis' three second-half penalty corners, Hannah Drawbridge maneuvered her way around the Golden Bears' arc before finding her teammate camped in front of Cal's cage. On her tip-in shot, Borsack beat Hendrickson to her left and notched her first-ever collegiate goal.
Cal responded six minutes later to push its lead back to a three-goal margin, at 4-1, only to see UC Davis strike again in the 69th minute.
On another play that began on a penalty corner, Kayla Wigney started the action by punching the ball towards Drawbridge's direction. As the team's stopper on that play, Drawbridge trapped the ball on the turf and then stepped away to watch Jamie Garcia score her team-high third goal.
By recording assists on both Aggie scoring opportunities, Drawbridge now leads all Aggies with five. On her next assist, the junior midfielder will double her career total.
Entering this season, Drawbridge set up three Aggie goals - all collected last year.
Cal scored its final goal of the day on a penalty corner that was earned moments before the final horn sounded. With the clock showing all zeros, the Golden Bears ran the final play of the afternoon and officially ended the match after taking its fourth shot of the half.
Including UC Davis' 8-4, second-half advantage, the Aggies outshot Cal 13-12.
Friday's match was the first of two UC Davis-Cal contests scheduled to take place in Davis this season. A rematch, with UC Davis slated as the official home squad, is set for Oct. 10.
Also competing in its inaugural conference match of the year, Cal was the designated "home" team due to the construction of its new field. All of the Golden Bears' matches will take place away from Berkeley this year.
The Aggies will complete their brief two-match homestand Sunday afternoon when Central Michigan visits campus. Action at Aggie Field Hockey Facility will begin at 12 p.m.
