Aggies Tennis Shines in Summer Events

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore-to-be Alec Adamson and incoming freshman Everett Maltby continue to heat up the courts this summer, qualifying for a pair of major amateur tournaments in the Midwest in the coming month to headline a number of Aggie accomplishments.

"All our players have been working hard to perfect their games this summer and we are seeing it pay off with great success," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "Following a year that saw us post our most successful Division I season to date, I am proud of how they have represented UC Davis across the country and I look forward to, what is sure to be, an exciting 2014-15 campaign."

Adamson, a first-team All-Big West Conference selection following a stellar freshman campaign, captured two titles and reached the finals of two more events during the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southern California Summer Circuit, tying UCLA standout Gage Brymer in points and punching his ticket to the ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Aug. 9-12.

Brymer finished his freshman campaign for the Bruins with a 27-6 overall record (18-3 in dual matches) and was ranked No. 69 in the nation as UCLA finished No. 3 in the country as a team following a trip to the NCAA semifinals.

Adamson claimed the singles title at a summer circuit stop in Laguna Niguel as the No. 6 seed while later adding a championship in doubles at a stop at Cal State Los Angeles. He reached the semifinals in singles as the top seed, and joined Aggie teammate Adam Levie to reach the finals in doubles, at a stop in La Verne, Calif., before roaring the finals, once again, in singles play at the circuit's third stop at Azusa Pacific before falling to Oregon standout Jayson Amos.

Featuring winners from nine regional circuits across the nation, Adamson will be playing for a wildcard bid to the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa on Sept. 27-Oct. 5, while also teaming with Brymer in doubles play during the event. In preparation, Adamson will compete in the USTA's Pro Circuit Features Event in Edwardsville, Ill., on Aug. 2-11 to ready himself for the National Summer Championships.

Maltby, who won the doubles title and reached the finals of the singles competition at a summer circuit stop in Davis in mid-July, qualified for the USTA Boys' 18s National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Aug. 2-10, competing for a spot in the draw at the U.S. Open on Aug. 25-Sept. 8 in New York.

Joining Adamson for the first stop on the Southern California circuit, Maltby reached the third round in singles play in Laguna Niguel with a pair of straight set victories, while Levie teamed with Adamson for a run in doubles.

Elsewhere, junior-to-be Brett Bacharach opened the summer with a trip to Canada to compete at a USTA Pro Circuit Futures event in Saskatoon, before reaching the finals of the NIKE Championships in Beaverton, Ore., eventually falling to the No. 1 singles player from the University of Washington, Kyle McMorrow.

Incoming freshman, and Hong Kong native, Tommy Lam racked up valuable international experience at Pro Circuit Futures tournaments in his home country, facing off against some of the world's best. He battled before falling to a French player ranked No. 1,291 in the world, and faced off against a player from India, who had been ranked among the world's top 500 players.

After recovering from nagging injuries, sophomores-to-be James Wade and Bryce McKelvie also gained valuable experience during the summer. In his first action of the summer at the Stockton Open, McKelvie fell in the first round of eventual finalist Chris Kipporus, who starts at No. 2 singles at Dartmouth, while Wade advanced to the second round of the 4th Annual Michael Chang Tennis Classic in Irvine as the No. 12 seed before falling to Shane Korber, the No. 2 singles starter at Georgetown.

Wade was named to the All-Big West First Team in singles following a freshman campaign that saw him finish 28-8 overall and 19-4 in dual matches -- leading in the league in wins in both categories -- while playing, mainly, at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the Aggie lineup.

McKelvie was one of four UC Davis players to finish with 20 wins overall, ending his freshman year with a 20-6 overall mark and a 15-2 record in dual matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots on the ladder. He was a perfect 5-0 against Big West opposition, winning his last four matches to close out the year.

Both continue their summer schedules this weekend with McKelvie at the Lafayette Open and Wade at a Pro Futures wildcard event in Irvine.
