"I am thrilled about welcoming the 2015 class into our program," said Henwood. "We have spent several years raising expectations and changing the lacrosse culture here at UC Davis. These eight exemplary student athletes have set the standard for every future Aggie lacrosse recruiting class. Consider the bar raised."
The Aggies went 8-8 in 2014. Their 2015 schedule kicks off on February 20 at Lehigh.
SARAH CORCORAN Midfielder • 5-2 • Fox Lane HS/Bedford, N.Y. Lettered in lacrosse and field hockey... Scored 31 goals with 13 assists as a sophomore... No stats were kept in her junior year, but she won All-NYS Section 1 honors... Selected as team captain for 2015 season... Played five years for NewLax Lacrosse Club (Wilton, Conn.)... Finished fourth year as a defender on field hockey team... Comes from an athletic family: father, Francis, played lacrosse at Buffalo State; mother, Susan, captained her Cornell basketball team. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Sarah is an athletic, explosive attacker who will provide consistency to our offensive systems. Her methodical nature allows her to feed, drive, finish, fill lanes, and become the well-rounded utility player that every successful team needs. She can fill many roles and will prove herself as a valuable asset within a redefined 2016 Aggie offense."
SHANNON CROSS Midfielder • 5-9 • Bishop O'Connell HS/Great Falls, Va. Three-time All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honoree, including first-team nods in 2013 and 2014... Key statistics: 40 goals, 18 assist, 71 draw controls, 32 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers as a freshman; 42 goals, 10 assists, 60 DCs, 35 GBs, 16 CTs as a sophomore; 52 goals, 16 assists, 89 DCs, 35 GBs, 26 CTs as a junior... Three-year member of Capital Lacrosse Club in Alexandria... Father, Peyton, played Division I lacrosse for Mount St. Mary's. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Shannon Cross is a game-changing middie who is expected to make an immediate impact in between the 30s. She is a draw specialist and has dominated the DC category at the high school level in Virginia. She is expected to contribute a no-nonsense attitude and a deep understanding of lacrosse at the highest level and due to the graduation of Elizabeth Landry, will be expected to fill big shoes next fall as a freshman."
OLIVIA EDGERTON Goalkeeper • 5-4 • Connelly School of the Holy Child/Chevy Chase, Md. Two-sport standout in both lacrosse and field hockey... Earned All-Independent School League plus Washington Post All-Metro and All-Gazette (Montgomery and Prince George counties) honorable mention as a junior... Led DC metro area in saves as a sophomore (236) and junior (190) after ranking second as a freshman (217)... Three-year veteran of Capital Lacrosse Club, competing at the national tournament... Also served as team captain in field hockey. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "I have been eager for Olivia to step foot in Aggie Stadium since I first saw her play. She is a technically sound, spunky goalie who will energize our defense with her vocal presence. She plays against some of the best club competition in the country every game, so she is primed and ready to explode onto the college lax scene. She will look to immediately challenge junior transfer Lauren Ali for minutes in 2016."
NATALIE GARCES Midfielder • 5-3 • Westview HS/San Diego, Calif. Captured second-team All-San Diego Section and first-team All-Palomar League distinction in each of her sophomore and junior seasons... Moved from defender to center mid as a sophomore, responding with 18 goals, 38 draw controls and 16 ground balls that year... Improved to 17 goals, 60 DCs and 20 GBs in 2014... Entering her sixth year as a member of Pacific Falcons Lacrosse. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Natalie is a gritty, blue-collar defender who I could not be more excited about. She will join other San Diego natives on defense next year and will embody the aggressive defensive identity that we have cultivated here at UC Davis. Her speed will be an asset in transition and her technical skills will refresh a veteran defense."
SAMI HERRICK Midfielder/Defender • 5-6 • Cathedral Catholic HS/San Diego, Calif. Garnered All-San Diego Section second-team distinction as a freshman, then added honorable mention as a junior... Twice captured first-team All-City League honors, and made "only" the second team as a sophomore due to a midseason injury... Led her team in scoring in 2013 prior to being sidelined by injury... Led the Dons in ground balls and caused turnovers in 2012 to claim team's Rookie of the Year award... Seven-year veteran of Pacific Falcons club, earning spot on San Diego's National Tournament (formerly WDNT) roster for the past three seasons. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Sami Herrick was one of our first verbal commitments of the 2015 class, and her dedication to UC Davis has already become evident in the recruiting process. She is a shifty midfielder who will add depth and consistency to our roster in that critical position. Sammi's perseverance and relentless work ethic enable her to do all the behind-the-scenes dirty work necessary to be a great college midfielder."
MADISON LANGLEY Attacker/Midfielder • 5-8 • Milton HS/Alpharetta, Ga. Helped team to back-to-back 19-3 seasons and two of Milton High's eight total state championships during her sophomore and junior years... The Eagles also ranked fifth in the 2014 Nike/US Lacrosse High School Top 25 and have finished 25th and 21st in the last two LaxPower year-end polls... A three-year member and MVP of XTEAM Lacrosse's Black, earned spots on Team Southeast at the National Tournament and the San Diego State Elite Camp... Will be first-ever Aggie from the Peach State. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Maddie Langley is a lefty attacker who comes from Milton High, Georgia's eight-time state champions and a nationally ranked program. She offers a versatile skill set, enabling her to contribute in transition and I really look forward to letting her loose within several different roles in our attack. The best component about Maddie's game aside from her natural talent and athleticism is that she is used to winning."
GRACE RICHARDS Attacker • 6-0 • John Carroll School/Bel Air, Md. Three-sport letterwinner (lacrosse, field hockey, swimming)... No statistics available... Participated at US Lacrosse U15 nationals, leading Top of the Bay club with 17 goals... Also competes for Baltimore-based North East Maryland Select club... Four-year Academic Honor Roll member holds a 3.8 GPA. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "Grace Richards is primed to play her best lacrosse during her college years. She is a perfect fit for our offense and will open up new possibilities with her unconventional style and uncanny vision. To her, scoring goals is like a chess game; she moves defenders, manipulates space, controls the pace, and after she sets up the board perfectly, she strikes with precision. She is a serious threat that will prove hard for many defenses to contain."
MACKENZIE SCHULER Midfielder • 5-11 • James W. Robinson Secondary/Fairfax Station, Va. Stars in both lacrosse and swimming... US Lacrosse All-Academic selection and National Honor Society member whose GPA exceeds 4.0. HENWOOD'S COMMENT: "At six feet tall, Attacker Mackenzie Schuler is an easy target. Her presence is sure to create a feeding frenzy within our attack. She is creative, athletic, and has a knack for finishing gracefully. I am very excited to welcome Mackenzie aboard our program, mostly because she has an enormous upside and will become a major force to reckon with within our attack."
