DAVIS, Calif. - Cal may have taken more penalty corners, but that was the only element that the Golden Bears outperformed the Aggies in as UC Davis dominated every other facet of Sunday's 2-0, NorPac victory, at Aggie Stadium.
The win improves UC Davis' records to 4-8 overall and 2-1 against NorPac teams; Cal falls to 4-9 and 1-3 with the result.
"One of our team's goals involved an undefeated record at home this year, we took another step in the right direction with the way we played today at Cal," said interim head coach Austin Pile. "We've been looking at our conference standings throughout the weekend and realized that we can earn a solid seeding at the NorPac Tournament if we win all of our home games."
Kayla Wigney helped her team take an early 1-0 lead on a tip-in that caught Cal's goalkeeper off-guard, and rolled in front of the cage before coming to a stop inside the near post.
Earning the assist on the play was Sophia Lisaius as it was she who set up Wigney with her pinpoint pass among a scrum of players that were fighting for position in front of Cal's cage.
"We have been working on our tip-ins, deflections and redirections at practice, it's nice to see them also succeed in game play," added Pile.
Armed with a one-goal lead when action resumed after the break, Agustina Singh provided an insurance goal for UC Davis when she singlehandedly weaved her way around numerous Cal players before recording her first collegiate goal.
"I tried to take a shot at the top of the circle, but saw a Cal player in front of me ready to block my attempt. I took it towards their goal and thought I drew a penalty corner; since nothing was called, I took a cross that hit the back of the cage," said Singh regarding her inaugural goal scored as an Aggie.
Excited, yet relieved to score her first goal, the Aggies' leading shot taker said following the game, "I'm ready to score many more goals, let them shower down upon my team."
Once UC Davis took its lead - one that Cal never came close to touching throughout the entire match - Danielle Herrington only needed to make one save throughout the rest of the afternoon to record her second shutout of the season, and third of her career.
Herrington's last clean sheet took place in her team's season opener, also at Aggie Stadium, against Missouri State.
Led by Singh and Stephie Sabraw with two apiece, UC Davis outshot Cal 8-6. Even when Cal pulled its goalie and competed with an extra attacker on the field throughout the final five minutes, the Aggies remain unfazed by the Bears' slight advantage and still found a way to outshoot their opponents in the second half by a 5-3 margin.
Both teams will face one another next Sunday, at Maxwell Family Field, to complete their head-to-head series.
"Going into Berkeley to play Cal, we know they are a skilled team on their home field. They are going to come out ready for a battle, we just want to prepare our team to compete, and hopefully come out of there with a victory for the first time this year," said Pile.
Earlier this season, UC Davis hosted two neutral-site games in Berkeley against Liberty and Dartmouth; the Aggies suffered a one-goal loss on both occasions. With Pacific forced to play all of its home games at Maxwell Family Field this season due to the construction of its own facility, Friday's road game against the Tigers will also take place on Cal's home turf.
