STANFORD, Calif. - Jonathan Peterson finished third overall in the men's 8K race while Sarah Sumpter was 12th in the women's 6K race to lead the UC Davis cross country team on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.
The women's team came in second overall with 138 points, edging Cal Poly who finished third with 139 points, while the men placed sixth with 194 points.
The meet also served as the official Causeway Cup matchup between UC Davis and Sacramento State. The Aggies collected five points apiece, bringing the cumulative score to 25-5 in favor of UC Davis.
Sumpter finished in a time of 21:01 as three Aggie women finished in the top 25. Alycia Cridebring was 17th in a time of 21:16 and crossed the line as UC Davis' No. 2 finisher for the second straight time. Krista Drechsler was 21st, recording a time of 21:21 in her 2011 debut.
"Sarah, Alycia and Krista did a really good job of getting forward and sticking," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "We kept our focus on staying loose and getting a reading of where we are without trying to press too much or hold on too tight. We ran decently, but today was far from our best effort and that's nice to have some things where we can look and get better over the next three weeks so that's exciting."
Freshman Katie Fry finished 49th overall with a time of 21:55 and was followed by Sarah Tusting who was 56th overall and recorded a time of 22:05. Samantha Kearney and Shannon Harcus rounded out the Aggie scoring, finishing 55th and 66th respectively.
Peterson finished only one second off the runner-up with his time of 23:22. Stanford's Chris Derrick won the men's race in a time of 23:15 while Cardinal teammate Jake Riley was second in a time of 23:21.
"Jonathan wanted to go up and run with the leaders and did so and this race was a big improvement over last year," said Wartenburg. "We have to get to a point where the men are focused on racing for each other and for the team rather than worrying or stressing about their own race plan. It's a step forward from two weeks ago, but we still need to close some gaps to get the group in a better position."
Axel Stanovsky recorded a time of 24:39 to finish 27th as the Aggies' No. 2 finisher while freshman Trevor Halsted finished 59th overall in a time of 25:12. Gregor Lloyd-Smith was 62nd (25:16) and Alex Summers was 71st, clocking in at 25:24.
Grayson Hough finished 65th overall in a time of 25:30 and Simon Graves completed the scoring for UC Davis with his time of 25:56.
UC Davis returns to action on Oct. 15 at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara. A second group of Aggie runners will also attend the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind.
