DAVIS, Calif. - Sarah Sumpter and Alycia Cridebring led the way for UC Davis cross country as four women finished in the top-10 on Saturday, claiming victory at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree.
The women finished with 33 points and edged runner-up Cal by only one point to take the team title. Sacramento State finished third with 69 points.
"The women stepped up and raced aggressively but also very patiently which was really what we had stressed," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "We talked about getting out, taking our position in the field and then just coming hard with a mile left and they did that really well. Everybody that finished in the top 10, except for Sumpter, moved into that throughout the race so it's a great step forward for the women."
In her first competition since the 2009 season, Sumpter finished third overall, clocking in at 17:15, and was UC Davis' top finisher.
Cridebring followed in fourth place with a time of 17:46 while Kristine Lozoya was sixth in her debut race for UC Davis. She finished with a time of 17:51.
In her first race as an Aggie, freshman Katie Fry finished ninth overall in a time of 17:57 while Shannon Harcus was 11th with a time of 18:06. Samantha Kearney's time of 18:24 earned her a 15th-place finish while freshman Raquel Lambdin rounded out the Aggie scoring as she placed 17th with a time of 18:28.
In total, three of UC Davis' scorers were competing for the first time in an Aggie singlet.
The Aggie men finished sixth overall with 147 points. Minnesota won the men's four-mile race with 15 points and were followed by Fresno State (91) and Sacramento State (93).
Axel Stanovsky led the men's side, finishing 13th overall in a time of 19:49 and was followed by Gregor Lloyd-Smith who was 23rd in a time of 20:17.
"We got a little excited early, so they got off well and got into the race but began to do a little too much thinking mid-race and began to relax too much," said Wartenburg. "It was a bit of a wake up call that said we have to physically and mentally perform from gun to finish, but we remain excited about some of the elements that we can put together for the Stanford Invite in two weeks."
Alex Summers, making his UC Davis debut, finished 31st, recording a time of 20:40 while Simon Graves and Grayson Hough were 44th and 50th, respectively. Drew Petersen followed just behind Hough in 51st, finishing in a time of 21:20.
Freshman Joseph Rivera completed the scoring for UC Davis, finishing 60th in a time of 21:35 in his first race as an Aggie.
UC Davis returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Stanford Invitational. The men's 8K race will begin at 10:50 a.m. while the women's 6K race will follow at 11:30 a.m.
