DAVIS, Calif. - Melanise Chapman and Chidinma Onyewuenyi each set school records and won two events for the UC Davis women but the Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams were victorious for both team titles at the Causeway Classic Duals at Woody Wilson Track on Saturday afternoon.
Natalia Wright won both the long jump and triple jump for the Sacramento State women which posted a close 99-92 win while Emilio Hernandez was victorious for the Hornet men in both the high jump and long jump, helping them outscore the Aggies 102-87.
Chapman finished first in both of the short sprints, winning the 100-meter dash before coming back to post a school-record 24.09 seconds in the 200 later in the meet. Her time bested teammate Ugo Eke's previous school record of 24.41 while also beating her own personal-best of 24.55 set this season. Eke had a PR of 24.36, finishing second.
Onyweunyi already owned the school record in the shot put at 48 feet, 10.25 inches but became the first Aggie to go over the 50-foot barrier with her winning effort of 50 feet, 4.50 inches during the meet's final event on Saturday. She also captured the hammer throw, going 187-3 early in the day.
Both UC Davis and Sacramento State won nine events during the meet. Eke was victorious for UC Davis in the 400, Kristina Taylor took the 1,500, Samantha Kearney won the 3,000 (10:06.46) and Lauren Radke finished first in the pole vault (12-6). Shanie Landen, Alana Babers, Lauren Wallace and Eke also teamed to deliver UC Davis a first-place time of 3:45.88 in the 4x400, capping action on the track.
Wright helped key Sacramento State's team win by going a wind-aided 19-3.25 in the long jump and 39-6 in the triple jump. The Hornets also won the 800 (Lea Wallace), 100 hurdles (Sakya Bolton), 400 hurdles (Nicole Jackson), high jump (Naima Goodwin), discus (Holly Lohse) and javelin (Emily Kersting). They also won the day's first event on the track, the 4x100.
Hernandez led a 1-2-3 Sacramento State finish in the high jump, clearing 6-4, and was also a winner in the long jump with a wind-aided effort of 24.5.5.
UC Davis captured eight wins during the meet, including those by Thomas Phillips in the 400, Nathan Strum in the 800, Jonathan Sees in the 3,000, Alex Wilright in the 400 hurdles, Eddie Orgon in the shot put and Ray Green in the triple jump. Ethan Ostrom, who won the pole vault at the Cal-Nevada Championships last week, won again this weekend with a mark of 17-0, the second time this year he's reached that milestone.
Jeffrey Campbell, Matt Council, Wilright and Phillips then capped the meet for UC Davis, winning the 4x400 in 3:16.00.
Sacramneto State's 10 wins were balanced evenly in both the running and field events. On the track, the Hornets earned wins in the 100 (Andy White), 200 (Justin Nesbitt, 21.38), 1,500 (Nathan Litwiller), 110 high hurdles (Ronald Brookins) and in the 4x100, while the field-event crew complemented Hernandez's wins by also taking the. discus (Zach Coniglio), hammer throw (Callan Duffy) and the javelin (Blair Wallingford).
The Hornet women won the rivarly dual for the fifth straight time while the men captured their fourth straight.
UC Davis will return to action at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA and the Mondo Invitational at Sacramento State next weekend.
