WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - Austin Graham and Tyler Raber each shot a 2-under 70 as the UC Davis men's golf team went 4-under, moving into a tie for seventh after the first day of action at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
The Aggies shot a team score of 284 and also received rounds of 72 from Andrew Haggen and Matt Seramin as well as a 75 from Matt Hansen. UC Davis is tied for seventh with Oregon State and Texas Tech and is only three strokes back from the top five.
USC is in first with a seven shot lead after firing a 17-under 271 on the day and is followed by Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State who are tied with a 10-under 278. Arizona State (279) and Oregon (281) round out the top five.
Oregon's Daniel Miernicki leads with a 62 after collecting an eagle and five birdies on his back nine. Matt Hovan of San Jose State and USC's Sam Smith and Jeffrey Kang are four shots behind him with 66s.
Graham bogeyed twice on his front nine, but recovered with a birdie on the 18th to move back to par. He stayed even as he moved into the back nine, then picked up consecutive birdies on the par-5 fourth and the par-4 fifth. Graham would remain at 2-under, hitting par on each of his remaining holes to finish the day.
After a double bogey on the par-3 11th and a bogey on his very next hole, Raber quickly moved to 3-over par, totaling two bogeys, two birdies and the double bogey on his front nine. Entering his back nine, Raber cut his deficit, finding par with a pair of birdies on holes four and five, then moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-3 seventh. He birdied on the ninth to move to 2-under and closed out his performance by hitting for par on the final hole.
Haggen carded six consecutive pars, then birdied on the par-5 18th to move to 1-under, but fell back to par with a bogey on the sixth.
Seramin's results were similar as the freshman shot par through his first five holes, then picked up a birdie on the 18th hole, before a bogey on the fifth moved him back to par.
Hansen's 3-over 75 was a result of a bogey on the 14th and a double bogey on the 17th to start. Despite three birdies in his back nine, Hansen hit a bogey on the par-3 third and carded a six on the par-3 seventh.
The tournament resumes Thursday with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
