BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore middle hitter Correy Johnson registered 10 kills and a .526 hitting average to lead 10th-ranked California to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 sweep of UC Davis in a Hilton Garden Inn Classic women's volleyball tournament match at Haas Pavilion Friday evening.
The Aggies even their record at 3-3. The Golden Bears remain unbeaten at 5-0.
UC Davis junior middle blockers Katie Denny and Betsy Sedlak supplied most of the Aggie offense in the match. Sedlak led her team with nine kills on 18 swings, while Denny chipped in seven kills and a .462 efficiency rate. Senior libero Kayla Varney picked up a match-high 17 digs on floor defense.
For Cal, Johnson complemented her 10-for-19 night with three block assists, one of five Golden Bears with such a total. Junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey added nine kills and nine digs, while setter Carli Lloyd was a perfect 5-for-5 on offense.
Denny helped keep UC Davis competitive in the opening set, scoring back-to-back aces in a 4-0 stretch that closed a 16-11 Golden Bear lead to a one-point deficit. She later posted her third kill on a tool to bring UC Davis to within a 22-20 gap, and teamed up on a block to keep the Aggies within two points at 23-21. However, Johnson clipped a hit off the Aggie's left-side block for 24-21 set point, then joined Kat Brown for a block on the next serve.
The Golden Bears never trailed in the second set, building a 15-10 lead behind two kills and a block by Johnson midway through the frame. Sedlak enjoyed consecutive stuffs to help the Aggies rally to a 15-13 deficit, but Cal answered with three straight points -- including an Elly Barrett ace -- to restore its lead to five. UC Davis' hitting efficiency dipped to just .050 in the second set after a solid .250 performance in the opener, and the Bears went into the break with a 2-0 match lead.
Johnson and Murrey each had two kills in an 8-4 Cal start to the third, then back-to-back block assists from Tia Gaffen and Lauren Loerch helped stretch that margin to 15-7. UC Davis never cut the deficit by less than six for the remainder of the match.
Cal ran its offense to a .483 hitting average in the third set, knocking down 16 kills against two errors. Overall, the Golden Bears hit .359 for the match, more than 200 points higher than UC Davis' .142 clip.
The Aggies continue tournament action on Saturday against Fresno State and Seton Hall at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
