STANFORD, Calif. - Six birdies sparked senior Austin Graham to a 2-under 68 in the second round while sophomore Tyler Raber had three on his way to a 71 as all five UC Davis players improved from their first-round scores, helping them to a 7-over 287 on Monday at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford.
The Aggies, who shot a collective 313 during the first round which was suspended by weather on Sunday and completed on Monday, are tied for 18th with Denver at 40-over 600.
Graham had a 77 in the first round before rebounding with his spectacular afternoon round and is tied for 37th in the 107-player field at 5-over 145. Raber cut eight shots off his first-round score, using his 71 to sit in a tie for 63rd at 10-over. Sophomore Tim Honeycutt improved by two strokes, shooting a 75 in the second round and is tied for 74th at 12-over.
Senior Brent Booth opened with an 80 before bouncing back for a solid round of 73 and is tied for 81st at 13-over while Andrew Haggen was seven shots better in the second round with his 78 and is at 23-over.
Graham opened his second round with a bogy but then birdied three of the next five holes to get to 2-under. He was later three under before a bogey on his last hole - the par-4 fifth - brought him in with a 68. Raber had birdies on a pair of par-three holes as well as the par-5 seventh to help him shoot 71 in the afternoon.
Each of the remaining Aggies had at least one birdie in the second round as UC Davis improved by 26 shots.
The field is another tough one for the UC Davis. Four teams ranked in the top 10 - 11 are in the top 50 - highlight the U.S. Intercollegiate. Third-ranked Washington and No. 33 San Diego State are tied for the lead at 2-over 562, a shot ahead of sixth-ranked Oregon and two up on No. 14 USC. Fourth-ranked UCLA rounds out a close top five, just four shots behind the leaders.
UC Davis is only three shots behind Fresno State and could move up several spots with another strong round on Tuesday.
Nick Taylor of Washington leads all players at 4-under with two others just a shot back. The medalist will earn an automatic exemption into the PGA Tour's Reno-Tahoe Open this summer.
Tuesday's final round at Stanford begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
