UC Davis Tied For 12th At Mauna Lani Invitational

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - Austin Graham and Andrew Haggen each shot 2-over 74s on Wednesday and are tied for 19th after the first round of the Mauna Lani Invitational, helping the UC Davis men's golf team into a tie for 12th place at the high-powered tournament.

The Aggies, who opened the 54-hole tournament with an 18-over 306 are tied in the team standings with fourth-ranked Florida State. Fourteenth-ranked UCLA was the only team to reach par on the first day at the par-72, 6,913-yard Mauna Lani Resort North Course, shooting 288 to lead No. 29 Oregon and 12th-ranked Washington by three shots.<>

UC Davis is just two shots back of Colorado and No. 17 Georgia Tech which are tied for 10th.

The 22-team event, regarded as one of the best tournaments of the season, features 11 teams ranked in the top 25 by Golfstat including No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Stanford and three others in the top 10. UC Davis, defending Big West Conference champion, opens the spring season ranked No. 63.

Also for UC Davis on Wednesday, Tyler Raber and Tim Honeycutt each shot 79 and are tied for 74th while Brent Booth finished with an 82 and is tied for 102nd. Five players, including Alex Kim from leader UCLA, are tied atop the individual standings after carding 70s.

Haggen got off to a great start in his round, carding birdies on two of his first six holes and eventually pushed his ledger to 3 under before giving back five shots over his final four holes. Graham also used a solid beginning - two birdies over his first four holes - before making his turn even. Birdies on the par-5, 2nd and par-4, 3rd helped get him in the red by two shots before playing the course 4 over the rest of the way for his 74.

Raber had three birdies in his round of 79 while Honeycutt was 1-under after eight holes before playing the front nine and eventually carding a 79 as well. Booth played the back nine with eight pars.

The second round will be played on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific).
