LA QUINTA, Calif. - Andrew Haggen parred his final eight holes, helping highlight his team-best 1-over 73 on Sunday as the UC Davis men's golf team finished the first round of The Prestige at PGA WEST tied for seventh at TPC Stadium Course.
The Aggies, who are co-hosting the 15-team tournament with Stanford, shot a collective 9-over 297 on the 7,300-yard world class course. Haggen is tied for 16th in the 81-player field.
UC Davis freshman Matt Hansen shot 74 and is tied for 24th, senior Austin Graham and freshman Daniel Covrig each had 75 and are tied for 31st, and junior Tyler Raber posted an 80 and is tied for 69th. Freshman Matt Seramin, playing as an individual, finished with a 78 and is tied for 57th.
The 11th annual tournament brings together some of the top golf-playing and academic institutions in the country and this year is no different. Eight teams ranked in the top 50 are part of the event, including six in the top 25.
Cal, ranked 22nd, was the only team to break par on Sunday, shooting 2-under 286 to lead Arizona State by four shots. San Diego, ranked 24th, No. 21 Stanford and No. 7 Washington are also close behind, tied for third at 6-over 294. Oregon is just two shots in front of UC Davis which is tied for seventh with UNC-Wilmington.
"We played really well," said UC Davis coach Cy Williams. "We were in there for quite a while but didn't finish. It's a difficult course but we did some good things to build off of."
Stanford freshman Cameron Wilson, playing his second collegiate event, set the early pace with a 5-under 67 and leads Thomas Buran of Arizona State by a shot. Three others are two shots behind as 12 players posted scores in the red during the first round which was played in temperatures around the 100-degree mark.
Haggen had an early bogey but countered that with a bogey on the par-5, 8th hole. A double-bogey and birdie put him one over with eight holes to play, setting up his string of pars to end the round.
Hansen got off to a great start with three birdies over his first eight holes but finished with five bogeys the remainder of the round to still post a solid round of 74. Graham had two birdies and Covrig also had two. Raber had two birdies also while Seramin got to 1-under early in his round before finishing six over.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday. The second round begins at 12:30 p.m.
