BERKELEY, Calif. - Alex Wilright broke a 27-year-old UC Davis record in the 400-meters on Saturday while Sirena Williams broke her own school mark in the 100 hurdles for the second straight week as UC Davis enjoyed another standout day at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal.
Wilright's school-record time 0f. 47.26 came in a classic duel against teammate Thomas Phillips who finished in second just .02 behind, also faster than the previous school record of 47.42. Williams' hurdle time was 13.79.
Jazz Trice continued the strong hurdles performance for the Aggies, winning the invitational race of the 110 high hurdles in a time of 13.65 seconds. The time was the fastest of his career and easily below his school-record time of 13.88 from earlier this season, but came with a wind of 2.5 meters/second, disallowing it for record purposes. It will however, continue to move him up the national rankigns.
On the women's side, UC Davis had an impressive showing from Ugo Eke in the 400, whose third-place time of 55.26 in the university/open section of the event jumped her one spot to No. 2 on the program's all-time ist.
Heptathlete Anikia Jackson also made a big jump on the Aggies' career javelin chart, moving four spots to No. 5 with her mark of 139 feet.
Wilright and Phillips, both 400 hurdles specialists who have already qualified for regional in that event, nearly did so in the open 400 on Saturday as well after just missing the qualifying time of 47.20. Wilright entered the race No. 4 on the Aggies' all-time list with a career-best time of 47.83 from 2007. Phillips, who had an eye-popping time of 50.96 in the hurdles on Friday, went 47.77 in the 400 earlier this season and was No. 3.
Their impressive race at the Brutus Hamilton put them 1-2 on the career list after both broke Shawn Rogers' 1982 record of 47.42. Mike Barber who went 47.64, also in 1982, was No. 2 before Saturday.
Trice, meanwhile, continued to race well this season in the high hurdles with his mark of 13.65 his fastest ever. He had gone 13.88 while winning the Cal-Nevada Championships in late March which established the current school record. Teammate Polly Gnepa also had a good race on Saturday, finishing sixth in 14.01, just off his PR of 13.99.
Another solid performance came from Ed Orgon in the discus, whose mark of 154-07 was a PR by nearly 14 feet.
Williams continued her assault on the 100 hurdles record book, taking sixth in the invitational race at Cal on Saturday in 13.79. That beat the 13.79 she clocked at the Mt. SAC Relays last weekend. The only faster time she's had as an Aggie came last season at Stanford when she went a wind-aided 13.75.
Eke, the school-record holder in the 200, entered the season third all-time in the 400 with a career-best time of 55.51. She dipped below that, though, on Saturday by finishing in 55.26, moving her past Katie Nash (2003) who was No. 2 at 55.40.
Jackson was another Aggie who altered a career list, posting a PR in the javelin by nearly eight feet at 139-02 and taking over the fifth spot on the all-time list. Jackson, who has already won two heptathlon events in 2009, is in her first season with the Aggies.
UC Davis will travel to Sacramento State for its annual Causeway Classic dual against the Hornets on Friday night.
