DAVIS, Calif. - Buoyed by a win in the javelin and a second-place finish in the long jump, UC Davis junior Anikia Jackson won her second heptathlon title this spring by scoring 4,903 points to capture top honors on Thursday at the UC Multi Meet at Woody Wilson Track.

Unattached competitor Mark Jellison, who had nearly a 200-point lead after Wednesday's first five events of the decathlon, widened his advantage on Thursday and scored 7,274 points to claim first place in that competition. The Aggies' Robert Neely was eighth with 5,824 points while teammate Will Guthrie scored 5,763 and took ninth.

Jackson, competing in just her second heptathlon as an Aggie after winning the Chico Multi Invitational earlier this month, just missed becoming the school record-holder in the event. She only trails Caroline Sheldon who scored 4,987 points in 2005.

Jackson entered Thursday in third place, just 26 points behind first-day leader Naima Goodwin of Sacramento State. She opened with 691 points in the long jump after going 17-11.50, barely behind Goodwin who had 700 points in the event. Jackson though, took the lead for good in the javelin, winning with a mark of 127-7 and picking up 646 more. She capped her day with 624 points in the 800, barely missing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5,050 points with her final score.

Goodwin was runner-up with 4,725 points while Kara Bennet of Stanford was third with 4,573.

Jackson led three UC Davis competitors in the two-day event. Freshman Johanne Boulat, who finished sixth with 4,151 points, highlighted her day with a second-place finish in the meet-ending 800-meter run, scoring 764 points after crossing in 2 minutes, 24.44 seconds.

Junior Tiffany Knox was fourth in the javelin after tallying 501 points with her fourth-place mark of 102 feet, 9 inches for her best placing. She was ninth in the overall standings with 3,950 points. Both Boulat and Knox improved on their scores from the meet at Chico State with Boulat moving into the No. 6 all-time position at UC Davis and Knox breaking into the top 10 at No. 9.

Neely and Guthrie were competing in their first collegiate decathlons and each enjoyed strong events on Thursday. Neely had his highest finish in the 110 high hurdles where he was third in 15.75 seconds, scoring 761 points, His other top-10 finish came in the pole vault where he tied for seventh at 11-7.75.

Guthrie's best placing was in the javelin where he was second behind Jellison, scoring 591 points with his mark of 164-7. His highest scoring total came in the hurdles where he picked up 597.

Jellison finished first in the hurdles (14.77) and javelin (168-4) and was second in both the discus (125-6) and pole vault (14-7.25) as he won the competition. Matt Bushnell (6,828) of Fresno State was second and Kyle Mills-Bunje (6,778) of Cal placed third.

UC Davis track and field will be in action this weekend, with part of the team competing at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and others at the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA on Saturday and Sunday.
