DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis junior Anikia Jackson won three of the hepathlon's first four events and is in third place jjust 26 points behind leader Naima Goodwin of Sacramento State, while unattached competitor Mark Jellison scored 3,825 points for the first-day lead in the decathlon, highlighting action on Wednesday at the UC Multi Meet at Woody WIlson Track.

Jackson has 2,942 points and leads three Aggies in the 12-competitor heptathlon field which includes teammates Johanne Boulat (2,464 pts) in eighth and Tiffany Knox (2,324 pts) in ninth. UC Davis freshman Robert Neely scored 3.,215 points during the decathlon's first five events and is in seventh while freshman Will Guthrie tallied 3,166 and is 10th.
The top three heptathletes are separated by less than 30 points heading into Thursday's final three events. Goodwin, who scored 839 points with her time of 15.02 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles for her best total of the day, has 2,968 points while Alison Worthen of Seattle Pacific is in second place, only two points ahead of Jackson with 2,944.
Jackson is nearly 200 points ahead of the her first-day score at the Chico Multi Invitational which she went on to win in early March. She had a strong opening day at UC Davis on Thursday, winning the 100 hurdles (14.61), shot put (36 feet, 7.5 inches) and day-ending 200 (25.85), posting 894 points in the hurdles for her best score.

Boulat highlighted her day with a solid hurdles performance, scoring 739 points with her time of 15.80, fifth-best among the competitors. Knox had her best score in the high jump, tallying 632 points after going 4-11.50 to tie for seventh.

The Aggies' trio is participating in their second multi-meets and women's coach Deanne Vochatzer is pleased with the progress so far.
"To learn how to go from one event to the other throughout the whole day and take care of yourself in between, that's a process," she said. "The stopwatch doesn't care if you're tired (and) the measuring tape doesn't care if you hurt."
Jellison captured three events on his way to the decathlon lead. He went 23-1.50 in the long jump for 823 points, added 683 in the shot put after his mark of 43-6, and then won his third straight event by clearing 6-7 in the high jump for 813 more points. He leads Matt Bushnell (3,641) of Fresno State by 184 points.
Guthrie and Neely are each making their decathlon debuts for the Aggies and enjoyed competitive opening days. Neely opened strong with a fourth-place finish in the 100, crossing in 11.33 for 789 points, and then had 716 points after placing seventh in the long jump at 21-7.25.
Guthrie finished fifth in the 400 in 51.68, scoring 739 points for his highest placing while picking up a Wednesday-best 755 points in the 100 after finishing the day's first event in 11.49.
"For their first (decathlon) meets of their college careers, I think they're doing dynamite, I really do," said men's coach Jon Vochatzer. "They've had some good events."
Competition concludes in both events on Thursday at Woody Wilson Track.
