STOCKTON, Calif. - Juniors Scott Weltz and Heidi Kucera won three individual events and UC Davis claimed victories in three of four relay events in a Big West Conference dual against Pacific at Chris Kjeldsen Pool Saturday afternoon. The Aggie men earned a comfortable 145-108 while the women lost a two-point decision, 132-130.
The victory improves the UC Davis men's dual record to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference while the women fall to 7-10 and 0-2. The Aggie men swam the final three events as exhibition and won 11 of the 14 events to earn their fourth consecutive dual victory over the Tigers.
For the third consecutive dual meet, Kucera was once again a three-event winner as she claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.75), 200 breast (2:21.12) and 200 individual medley (2:06.94). She also teamed with seniors Emily Medved and Mary Sturempf and sophomore Amanda Holman to place second in the meet-opening 200 medley relay (1:47.22).
Weltz pot together the most impressive showing with a sweep of the distance freestyle and a win the in the 400 IM (4:05.97) as an exhibition swimmer. His times in the 500 and 1,000 free were 4:33.41 and 9:17.18, respectively, beating out one of the top distance free swimmers in the conference. Weltz also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team. Weltz teamed with fellow juniors Russ Underwood and Daniel Donnelly and sophomore Kyle Anderson to win in 1:33.51.
Senior Alex Arbios, sophomore Jimmy Fong and freshmen Alex Daneke and Derek Baldwin won the 400 free relay in 3:11.17 in exhibition action.
Donnelly and Underwood also claimed two individual victories to help lead the Aggie men. Donnely won with time of 50.72 in the 100 backstroke and 50.39 as an exhibition swimmer in the 200 butterfly. Underwood claimed the 50 free in 21.36 and 100 free in 47.23. He was also third in the 200 free in 1:44.32.
The Aggie women finished 1-2 in the 400 free relay finale. Freshmen Kayleigh Foley and Buffy Ajimura, sophomore Linda Hermann and Emily Medved combined to win the 400 free in 3:36.19.
Other event winners included sophomore Tyler Ring in the 200 free (1:55.11), freshman Reid Hartz in the 200 fly (1:55.94) and fellow freshman Kyle Anderson took the 200 breast in 2:09.45.
The Aggies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 when the welcome Cal State Bakersfield to the Schaal Aquatics Center for a 1 p.m. dual.
