Big West Conference Championships Results

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Two UC Davis men earned runner-up finishes on Saturday at the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships while two Aggie women finished third as both the men's and women's squads finished seventh in hot weather at Cal State Northridge.

Jazz Trice (110HH) and Matt Swarbrick (discus) each took second while Sirena Williams (100H) and Kim Conley (1,500) each placed third.

All athletes had to contend with extreme heat which exceeded 100 degrees on the track at Cal State Northridge and forced the start of Saturday's action to be delayed more than an hour.

Long Beach State scored 185 points to beat Long Beach State (159) for the men's team title with Cal Poly scoring 116 points to finish third. UC Davis tallied 70 points.

The Aggie women tallied 59 points, just one point behind sixth-place UC Santa Barbara. Host Cal State Northridge won the team title, scoring 189 points to beat UC Riverside by 46 points. Cal Poly was third with 126.

UC Davis was participating in its first-ever Big West Conference Championship.

Trice, whose career-best mark of 14.03 seconds in Friday's prelim moved him to No. 3 all-time at UC Davis, finished second in the event in Saturday's finals in 14.06 seconds, both marks easily beating his previous best of 14.30 set last weekend at the Aggie Twilight Open.

Swarbrick - like Trice a qualifier for the NCAA Division I West Regionals in two weeks - also had a second-place finish on Saturday, posting a mark of 175 feet, 11 inches in the discus. Swarbrick eclipsed the regional standard for the ninth time this season.

Williams, another regional qualifier, led three Aggies in the 100 hurdles final, taking third in 14.19 and scoring six points. Gretchen Haussler was seventh in 14.81 while Gretchen Haussler (15.16) placed eighth. Conley, who has regional-qualifying marks in both the 1,500 and 5,000, earned the Aggies' other third-place finish with a time of 4:25.11 in the former.

The Aggie men had 10 other top-eight placings in Saturday's action, including third-places from Jonathan Peterson (5,000) and Polly Gnepa (110HH) and fifth-place showings from Tolu Wusu (triple jump) and the 4x100 relay team of Greyson Tarantino, Gnepa, Nolan Frazier and Trice.

UC Davis' women's team had nine other scoring finishes, including one from Conley who completed a difficult double by taking fifth in the 5,000. Also earning fifth-places were the 4x100 relay of Williams, Nicole Theus, Stephanie Eckels, and Ugo Eke, and from Chid Onyewuenyi whose mark of 45-07.75 in the shot put, solidified her No. 4 spot on the Aggies' career-leader list. That mark surpassed her previous best by more than a foot.

UC Davis will now turn its attention to the regional meet which will also be held at Cal State Northridge on May 30-31.
