DAVIS, Calif. - Polly Gnepa won the 110-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 14.01 seconds while Sirena Williams set a UC Davis record in the 100 hurdles in 13.93, helping highlight early action at the Aggie Twilight Track and Field Open on Saturday evening at Woody Wilson Track.
Gnepa, who has already qualified for the NCAA Division I West Region Championships later this month, bettered his previous best of 14.08 set earlier this year while breaking the school record of 14.01 established by current assistant coach Byron Talley at the 2002 NCAA Division II Championships.
Williams' mark lowers her school record from 13.96 - set at the Woody Wilson Open last month - to 13.93. She has gone faster this year, most recently 13.75 at Stanford last Sunday, but neither of her faster times had legal wind-readings, negating them for school-record purposes.
Other early highlights for UC Davis included an NCAA regional-qualifying mark in the 110 high hurdles from Jazz Trice, whose time of 14.30 was right on the standard. Micah Grant, who went 48.30 in the 400 for the No. 8 spot on the program's career list, was also an event winner on the track along with Gnepa.
Freshman Ray Green won the triple jump with a winning mark of 49 feet, 4.5 inches to improve his No. 10 position all-time at UC Davis while Matt Swarbrick moved to No. 8 on the shot put career list with his first-place effort of 52-8.
On the women's side, freshman Kiara Reed captured the 400 while lowering her career-best time to 55.93 and moving her to No. 6 at UC Davis, while Nicole Theus (100) and Lorin Scott (4:40.58) also had event wins.
Natalie Russell had a career-best time in the 400 hurdles, taking second in 1:01.93, jumping her to No. 6 all-time at UC Davis while Ashley Hearn (154-9, hammer, No. 8) and Kirsten Phillips (153-11, hammer, No. 9) also made dents on the program's all-time lists.
Alexia Burton added the final alteration to the career list with her second-place time of 12:13.40 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the last event of the evening. That improved her No. 9 position and was a nearly 16-second PR.
The meet is serving as the Aggies' final tuneup before their first-ever Big West Conference Championship at Cal State Northridge next weekend.
