April 5, 2008

Stanford Invitational Results

STANFORD, Calif. -- Ugo Eke finished third in the women's 400-meter dash on Saturday while Polly Gnepa posted a third-place showing in the men's 110 high hurdles as UC Davis had another strong day at the Stanford Track and Field Invitational.

Aggie men and women had standout showings in several events at the meet, one of the largest on the West Coast and featuring top open and collegiate competitors from across the country.

Eke was third in a tough 38-person field in the 400, finishing in a career-best 55.51 seconds, pushing her up to No. 3 on the Aggies' all-time leaders' list. Gnepa, who is already qualified for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships in the high hurdles, furthered his standout season in the event by also taking third with his mark of 14.32 seconds while racing into a headwind measure at -1.3 meters/second.

Eke had one of UC Davis' three marks that impacted the program's all-time lists. Kaitlin Gregg - racing a day after teammate Kim Conley broke a 25-year-old school record with her 5,000 time of 16:30.22 - debuted on that same list with her performance on Saturday while also qualifying for the NCAA Div. I West Region Championships. Gregg finished fourth in her section in 16:44.15, jumping all the way to No. 4 all-time.

The Aggie women also took fourth in both relays, going 46.94 in the 4x100 and 3:48.04 in the 4x400. The short relay is No. 5 on the Aggies' all-time list.

Jade Myles, competing in the top flight of the women's triple jump finished eighth (11.70m, 38-04.75). Kiara Reed had a season-best mark in the 400 (57.04), Alicia Ivanhoe did the same in the 1,500 (4:49.34) and Brianna Larson joined Gregg in qualifying for the Big West Conference Championships in the 5,000 with her time of 17:16.19. Lorin Scott did the same, qualifying with an impressive 17:02.27, eclipsing the conference standard by nearly 53 seconds.

For the men, freshman Jonathan Peterson concluded the Aggies' day at the meet, posting a personal-best time of 14:25.00 in his section of the 5,000 to move from the No. 10 spot on UC Davis' list to the eighth position. Teammate K.C. Cody also neared the list, finishing in 14:28.12.

The Aggie men also received another impressive performance from freshman Ray Green who continues to close in on the regional-qualifying standard of 15.00 meters in the triple jump. Green, whose previous best was just shy of the mark at 14.98 meters (49-02.25), went 14.99 on Saturday in the event's top section of competition to narrowly miss qualifying. He finished fourth in the high-caliber field.

Tolu Wusu won his section of the triple jump, going 14.36 meters (47 feet, 1.5 inches) while Matt Swarbrick finished seventh in the top flight of discus throwers with a mark of 51.42 meters (168-8).

UC Davis will travel to UCLA for an invitational next weekend.
