All-UC Field Event Results (men and women)
IRVINE, Calif. -- Ugo Eke won the 200- and 400-meter dashes and was a member of both winning relays for the UC Davis women which won 10 of 19 events at the All-UC Track and Field Meet at UC Irvine on Saturday, while the Aggie men posted wins in six events.
Both teams had the strong showings despite combining to take less than 40 competitors to the season-opening meet. The impressive start to the Aggies' first official NCAA Division I year resulted in a second-place showing by the women and a fourth-place performance by the men. Altogether, the women had 23 top-three finishes while the men finished with 19.
Five University of California schools participated in the meet with UC San Diego scoring 243 to win the women's race, just barely ahead of UC Davis which was second with 235. Host UC Irvine won the men's competition with 245.50 points with UC Santa Barbara (207.50), UC San Diego (199) and UC Davis (196) squaring off in a title battle for the next three positions.
Besides the high event placings, the Aggie women had eight marks impact their all-time leaders' list while the men had one.
Eke led the women's team during the meet on Saturday, winning the 200 in 24.83 while also capturing the 400 in 56.83. Besides her individual wins, she ran a leg on the Aggies' winning 4x100 (47.05) and 4x400 (3:48.70) relays.
She was one of two Aggies to capture multiple wins at the meet. Lorin Scott won a difficult double, taking first in both the 1,500 (4:31.67) and 3,000 (9:56.44) races, the former which put her No. 9 on the program's all-time list. Sirena Williams was the final winner on the track for UC Davis, winning the 100 hurdles in 14.37 which moved her up a spot to No. 3 all-time.
The women's remaining three victories came in field events where Tessa Fraser won the pole vault and moved up a spot to Nov. 4 on the career list with her mark of 11 feet, 7.75 inches. Ashley Hearn's winning throw of 145-2 in the discus makes her No. 6 on that list while Brittany Bickel posted the final first-place finish with her toss of 119-08 in the javelin.
Other marks that altered the all-time list at UC Davis came from Allison Stoakley in the steeplechase (11:29.79, No. 6), Jade Myles in the long jump (18-9, No. 8) and Chidinma Onyewuenyi in the shot put (44-05.25, No. 2) and hammer throw (150-9, No. 10).
The Aggie men, despite their limited team at the meet, also won several events, taking top honors in seven of the 19 contested. Jonathan Peterson finished first in the 3,000 with a time of 8:24.11, a clocking that jumped the freshman to No. 4 on the all-time list.
Polly Gnepa led a 1-2 finish for the Aggies in the 110 high hurdles, winning in 14.29 with teammate Jazz Trice close behind in 14.65. Jamie Feaster (15-1) and Josh Sandler (15-1) did the same in the pole vault while Jah Bennett, who holds the school record in the high jump, started his 2008 season in winning fashion, taking that event at Irvine at 6-06.75.
Freshman Ray Green won his first outdoor event as a collegian, winning the triple jump at 49-01.75 while Matthew Swarbrick won the discus, posting a mark of 176-0. Aggie teammate Jake Fuller took second at 154-08.
UC Davis will be back in action next Saturday when it hosts Stanford, Fresno State and San Francisco in a quadrangular meet at Woody Wilson Track.
