LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Ashley Cayford set school records in the 100-yard breaststroke and as a member of the 200 freestyle relay team and sophomore Daniel Donnelly set a new UC Davis record in the 100 butterfly to highlight the Aggies third day at the Big West Championships at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Friday.
The Aggie men, who also broke a school record in the 200 free relay, continue to hold on to second place behind conference favorite UC Santa Barbara with 456 points. The women's team is currently fourth overall, just 12 points behind Pacific for third. The Gaucho women led and are almost 200 points ahead of UC Irvine.
Cayford also hit an NCAA consideration time in the 100 breast and joins teammate Hiedi Kucera as swimmers who set new school records at the championship event. Her time of 1:03.31 in the 100 breast bests her previous mark and helped her finish third overall. Cayford teamed with fellow seniors Melanie Covert and Jill Olson, and freshman Amanda Holman to finish third and set a new school record in the 200 free relay in 1:34.50.
Donnelly set a new record in the 100 fly with his prelim time of 49.03 and finished fifth overall with a 49.09 in the finals. He broke Matt Casot's previous record time of 49.43, which was set four years ago. Donnelly was the highest finishing Aggie on the men's team. He returned later in the night to finish sixth in the 100 backstroke (50.40).
The Aggies' 200 free relay team of Evan Krauss, Russ Underwood, Russell Taylor and Jason Kim also set a school record when it finished second to UCSB in 1:22.49. UC Davis beat the previous school standard of 1:22.69 set at the 2003 NCAA Division II Championships.
Kucera narrowly missed her second NCAA consideration and school-record time en route to a fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley.
Freshman Jamie Flynn and senior Krysta Chaldekas finish second and third, respectively, in the 3-meter diving competition. Flynn earned the runner-up finish in her first trip to the championships with a score of 268.85.
Freshmen Linda Hermann (200 free, 100 fly) and Kyle Anderson (400 IM, 4:10.99), and seniors Russell Taylor (100 breast, 57.04), Nik Kemp (200 free, 1:40.76) and Jennifer Ginsberg (100 back, 57.44) were the top Aggie finishers in their respective events as they all qualified for the championship heat.
