LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Davis scored a meet-high 63 points in the 1,000-yard freestyle with four swimmers in the top 10 and totaled 125 points to take the overall lead after the first day of Men's Big West Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday night at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The Aggie women were led by freshman Linda Hermann's school-record time in the 1,000 free and are third with 98 points.
The Aggie men, who set a school record in the 200 medley relay, are 18 points ahead of conference favorites UC Santa Barbara while the women trail UC Irvine and the defending conference champion Gauchos.
Junior Alex Arbios and freshman Matt Herman led the Aggies in the 1,000 free with third- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Arbios topped his season-best by over six seconds with his time of 9:16.47 while Herman came in at 9:20.12. Senior Kyle Leto and freshman Adam Borchard followed them with seventh- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. Leto came in at 9:26.03 with Borchard scoring at 9:26.31.
The women also had a good night in the 1,000 free as Hermann finished second behind Karen Aliston of Pacific with her school-record time of 10:12.78, which bettered her previous season-best by almost 14 seconds and tops Michelle Jennings' mark by two seconds. Sophomore Kathryn Jovino placed ninth in 10:30.14, which was over nine seconds faster then her season-best.
Both Aggie teams managed third- and fourth-place showings in each relay event. The women placed third in the 200 medley with a time of 1:43.81 and were fourth in the 800 free in 7:29.44. The Gaucho women set a new meet record in the 200 medley, bettering the previous record set in 2002 with a time of 1:38.64.
The men reversed those showings by placing fourth in the 200 medley (1:31.01) and third in the 800 (6:46.68). The 200 medley relay produced a school record for the Aggies with Jimmy Fong, Russell Taylor, Daniel Donnelly and Evan Kraus finishing in 1:31:01. That broke the previous school record of 1:31.42 set at last year's Big West Championship, a mark that both Donnelly and Taylor were a part of.
The second day of the Big West Championships includes eight events and begins tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. with prelims. Finals will begin at 6 p.m. Live results and video streaming are available at bigwest.org.
