DAVIS, Calif. - Junior opposite Kylie Atherstone had 11 kills while junior middle blocker hit .412 with five blocks to lead 20th-ranked Cal Poly to a 30-18, 30-27, 30-21 sweep over UC Davis in a Big West Conference volleyball match at the Pavilion Friday.
The Aggies drop their seventh straight match, falling to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Mustangs improve to 9-6 and remain unbeaten in Big West action at 3-0.
For UC Davis, sophomore libero Avreeta Singh picked up a match-high 19 digs. Freshman Kayla Varney led the Aggies offensively with 12 kills, half of which came during her team's strong Game 2 showing. As a team, UC Davis hit minus-.017, suffering from 17 hitting errors in the third game.
The Mustangs broke loose midway in Game 1, enjoying a 10-1 run that helped break a 10-10 lock to a commanding 20-11 advantage. Junior Ali Waller had a block and a free-ball kill in aid of Chelsea Hayes' serving during that run. Atherstone had five kills in the opener to lead Cal Poly.
UC Davis enjoyed its best game in the second, rallying back from an 11-7 deficit to grab a 15-13 lead. Freshman right-side hitter Melanie Adams came off the bench to spark the team during the comeback, while key kills from Varney and juinor Erin Turner helped UC Davis push ahead by a 20-16 margin. Poly managed to grind its way back to a 22-22 tie, then sophomore defensive specialist Caitlin Suttich served up a 3-0 run that gave the Mustangs the lead for good.
The Aggies cut the lead to a 28-27 deficit on a Varney tool, but Atherstone provided a game point on a kill through the middle. Mustang sophomore Gaby Rivera took advantage of a free ball for the game-winner, sending her team to the break with a 2-0 match lead.
In Game 3, Atherstone's ace and a pair of Aggie hitting miscues cracked a 14-14 tie into a 19-14 Cal Poly edge. UC Davis had 17 attack errors against just 11 kills, while the Mustangs registered 5.5 of their 11.5 total blocks in the third. Atherstone had a kill and block assist during the game's final 5-1 run.
UC Davis remains at home to host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Match time is 7 p.m.
