DAVIS, Calif. - Micah Grant and Jonathan Sees each captured wins for the UC Davis men while Nicole Theus, Tiffany Knox and Jackie Turpin each finished first for the women, highlighting the Aggies' day at the Woody Wilson Track and Field Open, which was held in rainy and windy weather during Picnic Day festivities at UC Davis.
Inclement weather persisted throughout much of the event and forced the cancellation of four men's field events: the pole vault, high jump, triple jump and shot put.
Despite the tough conditiions, UC Davis earned several high finishes. Grant and Theus won 100-meter races with Grant taking the men's in 10.86 seconds and Theus doing the same for the women in 12.19. Sees captured the 1,500 invitational race, winning in 3:54.57 while Knox was victorious in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing in a personal-best 11:23.46 which also improved her No. 5 standing on the program' all-time chart.
Turpin provided the Aggies' final first-place finish when she led 1-2 showing by UC Davis in the discus. Turpin's best effort was measured at 129 feet, 5 inches, just in front of teammate Kim Gleeson, who was second in 126-10. Theus' win in the 100 led a 1-2-3 parade for UC Davis which also had Renah Howell (12.54) and Laura Romback (12.57).
UC Davis began its weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Southern California on Friday night with three distance runners participating in the large meet. Kim Conley highlighted the Aggies' performances, finishing second in her section of the 5,000 in 17:04.2, jumping her to sixth all-time at UC Davis. Patrick Parsel was seventh (14:51.92) in his section of the 5,000 while Chris Ferren-Cirino was 29th (14:40.04) in his.
UC Davis is scheduled to compete at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational and the Chico Twilight meet next weekend.
