EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Kim Conley had a career-best time of 21:12.90 during the women's six kilometer course, and freshman Jonathan Peterson paced the men in the 10 kilometer race to lead the UC Davis men's and women's cross country teams to 11th- and 17th-place finishes, respectively, at the 2007 NCAA Division I West Regional at the Springfield Country Club Saturday afternoon.
The No. 1-ranked teams in the country repeated as regional champions as Stanford won the women's race with 33 points and host Oregon won the men's title with 47 points. Galen Rupp of Oregon took home the individual title on the men's side; Teresa McWalters of Stanford won the women's title.
The Aggie men were the third-highest Big West finisher in the event while the women bettered four conference opponents.
Conley's career-best time placed her 28th overall and left her just three spots away from an all-region nod. After redshirting last season, Conley capped her first season back as the team's No. 1 finisher in all five meets she competed in this season.
"Conley ran the smartest race of her career," said Associate Director of Cross Country Chris Puppione. "She still has another year to come back and take another shot at all-region honors."
Along with Conley, junior Kaitlin Gregg (22:19.90), sophomore Brianna Larson (21:43.95) and senior Lorin Scott (22:12.80) all put in career-best times in their first-ever regional meet. In a field that featured 212 of the best runners in the region, all three finished in the top 100. Larson was the No. 2 scorer at 57th place and was followed by Scott, who finished 91st overall in her final collegiate race. Gregg was the No. 3 scorer by finishing 97th.
Freshman Brittny Escamilla rounded out the scorers on the women's side.
"Coach (Deanne Vochatzer) and I are very pleased with how the women finished," said Puppione. "Our goal coming in was to finish in the top 20, and for us to come in and finish 17th and be just 30 points from 13th, is just great."
Peterson paced the men's team, who were competing in their first-ever 10K race, for the second time this season as his time of 31:16.00 placed him 43rd and made him the second-highest freshman finisher overall in the 174-runner field.
Redshirt freshman Russ Pfaff capped his first collegiate campaign as the No. 2 scorer in 31:51.90. He was followed by sophomore Thomas Dileo (32:04.75), junior Patrick Parsel (32:25.45) and sophomore Adalberto Corres (32:32.90).
:"I'm very pleased with the men's finish," said Puppione. "We didn't run the best race, but we ran the race we needed to run today. We needed to take advantage of our opponents' mistakes and follow our race plan, and we did that. To finish 11th, which is higher that we've been ranked in the region all year, is great."
This was the final race of the season for both men's and women's teams.
