IRVINE, Calif. - Aggie junior outside hitter Erin Turner put down 14 kills and had a team-best six total blocks, but UC Irvine employed timely offense to take a 30-28, 30-28, 30-24 sweep over UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Bren Events Center Saturday.
The Aggies move to 3-14 for the season and 0-6 in conference play. The Anteaters improve to 14-6 overall, 3-1 in the Big West Conference.
Junior Renee Ibekwe provided offensive support off the bench, hitting 10 kills with a pair of blocks. Sophomore libero Avreeta Singh recorded three aces and had 15 digs.
For UCI, junior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman posted a match-high 21 kills for a .298 hitting average. Freshman Kari Pestolesi added 13 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore middle Chelsea Ellis hit .462 and chipped in four block assists.
UC Davis trailed for most of Game 1, often battling to within a point of the Anteaters but remaining unable to catch up completely until key hitting and blocking by Turner and Patterson helped the Aggies roll off five straight points to take a 25-23 lead. UCI answered with 4-0 run, getting back-to-back kills from Kellerman, then took a 29-26 game point on a Pestolesi kill. UC Davis managed to fight off two game points before Kellerman scored the game-winner.
The Aggies also made a comeback effort in Game 2, taking several one-point leads after a 12-8 Irvine start. Later in that frame, the Anteaters took a 21-18 lead, only to have it erased to 22-22 and 23-23 scores. Pestolesi and Kristin Kelley each had two kills down the stretch to pull UCI away for the victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In Game 3, Singh posted back-to-back aces during a run of six unanswered Aggie points, rolling UC Davis out to a 14-11 lead. Irvine eventually fought back, taking the lead at 19-18 on a block by Kellerman and Ellis. Kellerman later scored a kill and ace to bump the Irvine up by a 24-20 margin, and UC Davis never approached any closer.
The Aggies return home to host Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State on October 12 and 13.
