LA QUINTA, Calif. - Top-ranked Charlotte, paced by three golfers among the top 10 individuals, captured top team honors by eight strokes on Tuesday at The Prestige at PGA WEST, co-hosted by UC Davis and Stanford at the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course.
Wisconsin's Dan Woltman battled back from a three-shot deficit with a 3-under 69 in the final round to catch first-day leader Clayton Rask of Minnesota as the pair tied for medalist honors at the 16-team tournament which features some of the top academic and golf-playing institutions in the country. Nine of the top 50 ranked teams participated in the event with a ranked team occupying each of the top eight places in the final standings.
Freshman Austin Graham of UC Davis had a 76 during Tuesday's final round, finishing at 6-over 222 for the 54-hole tournament and tying for 32nd place for the best Aggie finish. Junior Ramie Sprinkling tied for 37th, following his 71 in the second round with a 77 in the last. Gregg Button, playing as an individual, tied for 41st.
Charlotte, which opened the tournament with a 7-under 281 and a 285 on Monday, was even on Tuesday but was able to post an eight-shot win over the co-host Cardinal. Stanford, the defending NCAA champion, had the best round of the day with a 284 to move past No. 42 Central Florida, which was third at 5-over. No. 14 Pepperdine and No. 45 TCU tied for fourth at 12-over while No. 28 Wisconsin (+14), No. 30 UC Irvine (+15) and No. 48 Michigan rounded out the top eight.
UC Davis had a 14-over total of 896 to finish 15th, just three strokes back of Denver. Sophomore Phil Huffman had the best round for the UC Davis scorers on Tuesday, playing a solid round with one birdie, 14 pars and three bogeys on his way to a 74. He had nine straight pars to start his round. Huffman finished the tournament at 16 over and tied for 75th.
The Aggies' Nate Pistacchio shot a 75 on Tuesday, tying for 54th while Matt Marshall had a 77 and tied for 66th at 13 over to round out the team scorers. Button had a 76 in the final round to finish at 8-over 224 while Brent Booth, also playing as an individual, finished 79th after a 77.
Woltman's final round featurd six birdies, including four over his first nine holes as he made the turn at 4-under 32. He had three bogeys over his final nine holes but was able to catch Rask who had a steady round of 72, posting two birdies and two pars.
Charlotte used three players in the top to earn its team title. Corey Nagy finished third at 5-under 211, Jonas Enander Hedin tied fo fourth one shot back and Andrew DiBitetto had a 75 and finished in a three-way tie for eighth at 2 under.
UC Davis returns to action at the Pacific Invitational on Nov. 5-7.
