SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Junior Kim Conley finished a season-best third in the women's 5 kilometer race and freshman Jonathan Peterson had a career-best finish of 15th in the men's 8 kilometer race to lead their teams to 7th- and 3rd-place finishes, respectively, at the Santa Clara Invitational at Bayland Regional Park Saturday morning. The meet also counted as a dual meet for the Aggies and the host Broncos. The men finished ahead of the Broncos while the women dropped their dual.
The men were third in the 17-team field with 117 points while the women scored 152 to finish seventh out of 16 teams. San Francisco won the women's 5K with a low score of 76 and were followed by Big West member Long Beach State. The 49ers won the men's race with a low score of 85 and were followed by Loyola Marymount who finished just six points ahead of the Aggies with 111 points.
The meet was also scored a double dual for UC Davis and host Santa Clara. The men defeated the Broncos, 22-32, while the women fell by a score of 30-24.
Conley had her best finish of the season as her time of 17:22 placed her third in the 140-runner field. In her first season back after redshirting last year, Conley has now finished as the Aggies' top runner in all three meets she has competed in this season.
"We're disappointed with the overall outcome of the race," said women's coach Deanne Vochatzer. "We wanted to do better as a team. Obviously, we had some great individual finishes, but this is a team effort and we need to improve. We want to start racing and competing well across the board."
Sophomore Brianna Larson was the No. 2 runner for the second time this season as her time of 17:52 placed her 17th overall. Freshman Brittny Escamilla was the No. 3 scorer and had her best race as a collegiate athlete by finishing 40th.
For the second time this season, Kaitlin Gregg was the No. 4 scorer as she finished right behind Escamilla in 44th place (18:17). Senior captain Lorin Scott rounded out the Aggie scorers in 48th place with a time of 18:25.
After sitting out two weeks with illness, Peterson was the top finisher on the men's team for the first time in his young collegiate career with a 15th-place time of 25:14. He was followed by redshirt freshman Russ Pfaff who also had the top scoring performance of his career and finished 26th (25:28).
Junior captain Patrick Parsel was the No. 3 scorer with a 30th-place time of 25:32. The scoring was rounded out by redshirt freshman Kyle Suarez (35th, 25:37) and sophomore Thomas Dileo (39th, 25:40).
"We weren't 100 percent coming into this meet and that is never a good thing," said men's coach Chris Puppione. "We tried to run a more controlled race, but we just didn't execute the plan. We really didn't run well today and we're a much better team that what we showed today."
The Aggies return to action in two weeks at the Big West Championship, which will be hosted by Cal Poly at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course.
